    Hi all, Tomorrow I was thinking about going out to the Concord West area/Rhodes area to do some photography with my new camera , I have a couple of questions -  Can you get a good view from Concord West of the freights crossing from the Up Main onto the Relief Road?- And would Rhodes station be a good photographic location as the freights stop there sometimes and wait for the Road North?

    Definitely. Freights always go to and from there on a regular basis. I see them all the time when Im on that line.   Wink

    Does your new camera have a reasonable telephoto capability?

    In that general area I like to go to the park near the ferry wharf at Meadowbank and take photos from there. You get a reasonable view of northbound trains....  The light is good in the afternoon, but if it were overcast, you might get a good view of the freight trains heading north in the slots around 1200 to 1300.

    There are often a couple of south bound trains at that time too, often a PN container and a steel train...

    If you were mainly interested in southbound trains, since the reclamation has progressed there is a small park next to the bridge on the Rhodes side now. It is probably a bit low for the southbound trains, though...

    The big shopping centre at Rhodes gives the area a pretty enclosed feeling but around midday the shadows mightn't be too bad.

    Yep It is an 18xoptical zoom,  Very good telephoto capability,  So what I was thinking standing on Concord West down Platform and getting the freights as they cross from the Up Main to the Relief Road there - As to freights going the other way I am not to sure - Ill work it out when i get there  Wink

    I've spent a bit of time at Concord West. The lighting is best in the morning, not really that great of an afternoon. A couple of things to note as well. The down trains are best to photograph from the No.1 platform
    You need to pay careful attention to the signals. They will be set at very late. When I've been there, the signals are often not set until the train is just about there, hence it can be very easy to miss shots or not be ready
    Also, should you use the No.1 platform, you must be aware of what is next due towards to city. The express trains come through there at high speed, without a great deal of noise, so you may not hear them coming.

    I favour North Strathfield, as the lighting is very kind to down trains on the relief. Be forewarned though, that occasionally down trains will cross to the down main when they come off the goods line, and will cross an up train slowly proceeding along the refuge. I've been caught out by this before.

    As Stephen says, the signals will be your key. Watch the signals and the points, and they will tell you when something is coming. Also, if you know when the XPT/Xplorers are due, it is very possible to "chase" freights on the north. I've often taking a photo at North Strathfield, and then watched the XPT come through, only to board a suburban and pass the freight at Rhodes waiting for the suburban to pass. If you decide on that, I like West Ryde as a location for a followup shot, as it's not too far away.

    Thanks guys- I will give it some thought- I will take both of your reccomendations into account- Re West Ryde I may give that a go too- As you can sometimes get freights stopped on the outer track waiting for clearance

    Since the ATRICS system went in, the signals in a lot of interlockings - including this area - are effectively "approach clearing". The signals won't clear until the train is close to them, and frequently even the train's crew see restrictive signals for this reason. As I understand it it's partially due to a certain amount of automation, and partially to prevent delays should a signaller decide to change the road at the last minute (avoids the timeout).

    Well As I said, I went out and took some shots around the Concord West, Rhodes, West Ryde, areas, I got some freight trains , I took them with my new camera that I got before xmas- I am still learning this camera



    2NY3 with NR115 on point crosses from the Up Main to the relief at Concord West






    A late running MB7 comes down the relief at Rhodes station






    MB4 is also running late- This time she is passing on the Main- With an empty V-Set occupying rhodes back platform



    NT35 Speeds through West Ryde station with the down Grafton XPT



    2BM7 Eases it's train down to West Ryde and it's eventual destination of Glenlee






    Late running again 2MB2 powers it's way north through West Ryde station

    Some constructive criticism, if I may:



    I really like this one, except for one thing - the trackside equipment got in the way of the front of the locomotive. Your shot of 2BM7 also has a couple of staunchions in the way.

    Both these shots would be better if you waited one or two more seconds until the front of the train was clear. This is particularly the case for still shots - staunchions and signals and such getting in the way aren't so much an issue for video.

    I hope that doesn't sound overly critical - just hoping to bring it to your attention for next time Smile

    Mate I'm not trying to take anything away from what Nadnerbster said... hell I'm sure you both know boat loads more about photos then me (not sure I even own a camera) but man some great shots from platforms I work.... just love it!

    Another spot for me to try when back over gunzelling from Perth (still
    defrosting from my December UK trip!).

    I presume this is again a spot where there is a freight blackout due to peak hours but can anyone tell an ignorant sandgroper what the likely movements through these stations on a daily basis?
