Where to find old pictures for Billposters and the like

    I want to make some lineside Billposters and shop/service station advertising posters.Is there a site that covers this type of stuff.Non railway sites?? circa 1950 to early 70s.What type of stuff was advertised?one i do remember was Bex,and as a paperboy in the early 70s, Grannies and granpas would buy them off me on my paper run ,unfold them and down the hatch, it was quite funny really.

    A great book that could be of some asistance is 'Signs of the Times" by Geoff Hocking ( ISBN 1 4124 792 6).
    As quoted on the cover "A nostalgic celebration of Australian advertising signs"

    The Bex powders sign you are looking for is on page 84, in the same photo is also adds for Vincent's powders (the other old school drug of dependence) plus retro soft drink adds.

    A vast majority of pictures are in colour, 220 odd pages, so scan, minipulate then print.
    this is one of the better gifts from the bride that could be used on Victoria Street.

    Another great source of pictures is google images.

    I found a lot of useful images in the eBay listings, particularly if you look at Collectables Advertising and search for metal signs.

    A lot of the images are poorly photographed and you might need to photoshop those to get the signs square on. But generally if you can wait a couple of weeks a better image will turn up.

    What I do for scaling signs etc is download it, then manipulate it if needed and then when I get to print I do a couple of prints of it in varying sizes on the one sheet, with a notation written onto each one as to the settings. Once you have established which one is the right size.

    You can then transfer it to another file and copy it out as many times as you need on the one sheet and away you go after you hit print. Dont forget to save it though just in case you need more of them later on.

    I find it easy to find/scan then load/label jpgs into a separate files.

    Open a word file, insert a picture of a known size to your scale as a reference, then insert your next picture, crop out the unwanted detail, then click on the corner of the image and resize it to your reference (you may need to bump up the screen magnification to make sense of your handiwork).
    Copy and paste a few times on the same page.

    Another good thing about word is signwriting, type in one font in one colour, highlight text in another colour, ta da!

    Save then print (have a crack on a B/W laser printer first, to check sizes, before lashing out on colour with an inkjet, nothing worse than finally getting everything looking good, to find out that the replacement ink cartridge costs more than the the printer!)

    Save to a USB, then print out at work or mates place.

    Have a play and see what you come up with.

    Hi all,
    also on the Model Railroader forums in the Layouts section there is a thread on signs and someone posts lots of images. There are several that are the same as some Ozzie signs or will pass for them.
