S-set Scrapping has begun

"s3_gunzel"

Novel? Hardly. People always use the intercar gangways to do silly things. I've seen groups of four or five all squeeze into the gangway and shut both doors so they can smoke. Very nice of them to close the door, at least till they opened it again...

What set was C3188 in and when was it withdrawn?

Details, including compositions of the 24 cars involved in the 3-train single deck electric train collision and partial sideswipe between Roseville and Lindfield on 28 July 1950, can be found in the ARHS Bulletin, December 1950; pp129-131. The incident has footage on "Major Australian Rail Disasters - Pt 1" on Youtube, but the date is incorrectly given as 1935. The January 1945 Merrylands derailment which saw C3176 rebuilt with an off-side swing door to the driver's cabin is also included on this Youtube clip.

There was an accident at Gordon in 1935, however the photos provided by the October 2003 issue of "Under the Wires" are different.

The Gordon incident occurred on 15 March 1935 when an 8-car set led by C3231 ran into the back of a pick-up goods shunting the Ku-ring-gai Shire Council's hopper siding (which was trailing to the Up North Shore line), causing C3231 to suffer severe body damage, including a broken back.  Rather than being condemned, C3231 was rebuilt by Elcar and survived until 1980.  A photograph of this car carrying blue and white livery at Rockdale on 5 May 1978 appears on p145 of "Coaching Stock of the NSW Railways - Volume 3 - Electric Cars" (Eveleigh Press, Sydney, NSW 2012).

Off thopic for a bit if your in Melbourne  it's a similar story with the Comeng's only used more often for vandalism inside the train. Back on topic during a visit I made last year one of the main doors was wide open on C38xx in the airport tunnel and it got withdrawn soon after. With 28 Waratah's now in service in Sydney I guess 28 S-Sets have been withdrawn/scrapped?

That would be an incorrect assumption. The Waratahs are also being used to increase capacity ahead of various network upgrades to begin later this year/earlier next year.

I dunno if they were withdrawn as such as remarshalled. I think two of the cars in L13 (formerly L3) still had the semi-permanent slackless drawgear instead of autocouplings. Only saw it the once briefly, but I wonder how long it retained that? The two cars might still be together even now...

Well just to clarify, we have only 5 S set cars on site, not sure why someone would have said "where full of S sets ...". Cars on site are 3030, 4949, 4105 & 3042 for Heavy Component Change Out and is currently on the first CCO rd. The 5th car is 4126 damaged last year in a derailment and is awaiting transfer to chullora. There are a number of V set cars on site probably about 18 or so, mostly series two cars of the DCM,DTD,DCT range and 5, series 3 cars, 8038, 8040, 8045, 8059 & 8020. V40 is also here for warranty work.

To try to get an idea of which S sets remain, I have attempted to observe those in service.

The summary is Flemington has 52 active sets and Hornsby  27 active sets.

I missed seeing 12 Flemington sets and 7 Hornsby sets from my data base.

I have not checked the remaining 11 Mortdale sets [11 have already transferred to Flemington]

Perhaps he was suggesting that Maintrain was full as a whole, and mixed up the wording to imply that S and V cars are everywhere.

What evidence is there to suggest that any scrapping has taken place. I understood a tender process was to be undertaken first with the successful bidder(s) doing the scrapping and that may be a fair way down the track.

The 5 roads at Enfield have capacity as follows:-

No.1 road (closest to Up and Down Main Goods Roads) capacity for 24 S set cars.
No.2 and No.3 roads each has capacity for 24 S set cars.
No.4 and No.5 roads each has capacity for 32 S set cars.

Total S set capacity = 136 cars.

Road 5 was filled first (commencing early August 2012) with 32 cars, then Road 4 was filled, followed by Road 3.

All of Road 5 was cleared on 13/2/13 with 31 cars going to Chullora (as per earlier Photo) and one car, 4150, going to Flemington Car Sheds.

3050  -- this car is in set S41 as shown in the listing above.
3974  -- at Enfield
3985  -- this car was in S70 and was swapped with 3030 and should now be in S139.
3986  -- this car is shown in the listing in S147.

Another set not mentioned above, and has not been sighted for some time:-
S58 (3848, 4702, 4703, 3832).

I'll quickly amend a typo I made in the above post:-

Unallocated power cars [displaced from sets]:
3985 -- this car was in S139 and was swapped with 3030 and should now be in S70.

What evidence is there to suggest that any scrapping has taken place. I understood a tender process was to be undertaken first with the successful bidder(s) doing the scrapping and that may be a fair way down the track.

"nswtrains"

According to a friend on the railway, a tender was issued last August 2012 for removal of old Passenger Rolling Stock, which includes the Intercity V set cars.
The bid was won by a Scrapper.
The scrapping of the cars was to have commenced at the end of January 2013, if the Scrapper had everything in place ready to go.

S75 is at UGLUnipart Auburn for heavy CCO. S51 is also listed for heavy CCO along with two other sets which I can't remember the numbers of.

Also the car plan for overhaul 2013/2014 will include about 40 S set cars or 10 sets. When I know the car numbers I will post. This is due to too many S sets coming due for overhaul and not enough waratahs to fill the gap if the S's are removed from service.

Thanks Scott, 244 and TLG for tidying this up with your input. The list with CORRECTIONS and allows us to observe changes from here.!!

This list indicates 59 active sets at F, 10 sets to transfer from M and 31 active sets at H - total = 100 active sets.

My only query - if 4967 is in S143, which of 4161 or 4987 was replaced?
