Miscellaneous SA Sightings

  SAR520SMBH Train Controller

Busy morning this morning.
I was at Fosters and saw AM8 pass PM6 that was in the loop at Belair. MP1, MP9 and MP5 all came through one after the other. PM6 was then released from the loop and crossed a work gang that was pulled into the loop at Mt Lofty. PM6 then pulled into the loop at Ambleside to allow MP7 through.
I watched PM6 leave Belair then met it again at Mt Lofty and waited to see MP7 pass at Mt Lofty.

Thanks guys.

Also when on the first Gawler train to Adelaide this morning, I saw FQ02 & an unknown ALF prepare to couple to hopers at Dry Creek North, bound for the north. I'm going to alight at Salisbury & see if it will return before 6pm. Fingers crossed it comes.

There used to always be a Grainy headed up (Towards Melb) at about 1100-1200 on a Saturday morning.
Even that hasn't been reliable!

On my way to Eden Hills today, I captured ALF19-FQ04 haul the ore train for Whyalla (I think).

I'm hoping that there's a grain train on the south line today before 2:49pm, when I passed Dry Creek North there were two sets of hoppers & in Dry Creek South, I saw 5 GWA locos (GWU-GM-700-CLP-FQ) with someone alighting from the GM. Hoping its a sign!

Cheers. Today was actually the first time I've spotted (& filmed) that particular train, and boy did ALF18 put on a smoke show!

Tomorrow morning I'll be just down the road from my house at the Heaslip Road crossing. Be great to capture another empty 'grainie' like last Wednesday morning (GM45-CLF6 hauled that train).

Saw GWU005-GM46-705-GM45 pass Coromandel at around 1:30pm today with empty grain wagons. Ironically the first three locos were exactly the same as Tuesday.

Well, the locos were in exactly the same order as the one on Tuesday, would've thought it would be a rarity.

ALF19-2212-CLP8-CLF6 passed Blackwood at about 12:30pm today with an empty grain train. Good sight although it wasn't powering through the station though. Made a good sound just after passing though.

Do grain trains run on days that are wet like today?

They can run, it's just they can't load (unless the loading chute is under cover)

This just in, a friend told me there's a 'grainie' from Karoonda (due at Belair around 1730). I'll be making my way up to Bridgewater.

According to the GSR website, The Overland no longer runs on Thursday. Hope it's true so the grainie doesn't have to wait longer to get to the port. Smile

Interesting observation Rhys, the timetable on GSR's web site has the Overland  doing two return trips per week. Adel - Mel mondays and fridays, and Mel - Adel tuesdays and saturdays.
YET I was able to call up a booking for the 29th May (wednesday) with a return on 30th May (thurs)!!!!!

Also of interest they show a number of saturday 7MA8 services that will have "bustitution" between Southern Cross and North Shore Geelong, and no Motorail service due to works for the Regional Rail Link Project in Melbourne. Dates are quoted for various saturdays from May to December.

Sadly the grain train I was hoping to film didn't show up at Bridgewater today, my friend told me it was somehow delayed by 3 hours, but not due to failures.

So once again I wasted almost a whole day trying to spot a grain train. I'll try again tomorrow at Bridgewater, fingers crossed.
