Something odd for the Bankstown Line train at Campsie

I don't know whether other lines have such odd thing. It happens like this:

According to the timetable and my experience, every night there will be at least one train (what I have known is the 8.13pm service to Liverpool via Bankstown) towards Bankstown departs at the city bound platform (platform 1) at Campsie, instead of the usual, designated Bankstown bound platform 2, making use of the crossing before and after the station to access Up Bankstown.

I'm wondering the meaning of this practice. Anyone has an idea?

Regards.

As Joan points out, the train performs a points/rail clean over those crossovers. It allows them to remain in use in case they become required on short notice. If it isn't done within a few days, then it becomes booked out of use and they need to go through a whole procedure to bring it back into use. As such, CityRail performs movements usually late at night or early in the morning but not always which helps ensure operational flexibility, especially when things go wrong.

Sections of track need to be used at least once every 72 hours to remain reliable for track circuitry. Or rust/debris will cover the rail head and could cause false or incorrect TC operation.

Other such daily examples include trains that terminate at East Hills and Turrella late at night.

Plenty of these moves happen outside of the timetable, as empty cars. An example of this would be trains that run empty through Central Station to points clean between Central and Goulburn Street Tunnels (known as Tivoli and Tivoli East).

Are there any movements timetabled to use the crossovers between the up Bankstown and the down Goods line to Enfield either side of Campsie Station? Obviously nothing electric in the up direction given the missing bit of overhead at Marrickville. Is the overhead still live through Enfield to Flemington? If so do suburban sets traverse it occasionally ?

Enfield to Flemo is still live, as they are moving sets to/from Flemo for storage.
Points Up bankstown, down goods AFAIK are working, but need to booked back into use as they dont see traffic every 72 hours. There have been trains in the last 12 months from have gone from Leightonfield to Botany via Bankstown.
