Pacific National trainee and qualified drivers - NSW & VIC

  Steve82 Junior Train Controller

Just had a lengthy chat to a family member who works for PN intermodal, has loved his job since he started in his late teens, just confirms that I have made the right decisions in pursuing a career in rail. He said once your done driving there is plenty of opportunity to get into other parts of the PN business. Looking forward to those trainee posies Smile!

That is one of the main things that i like about a career in rail. There is a great variety of jobs out there, even from the driving side of the industry. Hopefully one day i can get a position as a trainee driver and get my career going in rail. Patients is the key.

Hi Stuart@asciano
I am very excited to hear that Moss Vale will be putting on new trainee's in the next 1-2 months Smile I have some friends who have been working for Pacific National and love their job so I am very keen to get on board as well.
Is there any thing I can do ie experience/courses/certifications  which would help me get interview? Like many people on this forum I am willing to undertake what ever is necessary to get a foot in the door! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mossvaleman

Spiritman is correct - unfortunately from further discussions with the Depot Manager and my colleague up in NSW - it looks like the Moss vale depot won't have a need for more trainees again until the end of this year or early next - not the best news I know! This however can change depending on business and client requirements.

Have you applied to PN before? If you have I can try to find out specific information for you on what may give you a better chance for the next intake.

To give you some perspective on the daunting task we face - the last intake we had at Mossvale resulted in us receiving 444 applications for 9 vacancies. It unfortunately means that the recruiter looking after the role needs to be a little 'ruthless' in their decisions on applicants. A lot of the decisions they make are based on 2 key factors - 1) Being a 'local' or within a 45-60 minute drive to the depot & 2) Having a mechanical aptitude / background. Also being in quick with your application is highly advisable. We don't really have any other prerequisites to apply for Trainee roles, having a background in and around the rail sector is good but certainly not essential and there are no courses or training seminars we would recommend applicants undertake - as we will place you through the training as part of becoming a qualified driver.

Hopefully that helps a bit - as I say, be quick in your app and demonstrate your mechanical aptitude/be close to the depot - and that will give you the highest chance of an interview. Let me know if you have applied in the past and I will look into it for you - feel free to PM me.

Hi Stuart, i applied about 2 years ago and was knocked back.
I am just curious as to what i can do to improve my chances. I have since been caught up with personal stuff which is why i havent applied since. I also hold s commercial pilots licence and other endorsements, which may be a good thing or a bad thing.
Would that be ok if i can get some feedback?
Thanks!

Hi Stuart

Just wondering if you have had any luck finding out if there is the possibility of trainee driver positions coming up in Cootamundra and Junee. I know that Junee had recruited for trainees that have been signed off to driver under instruction but could there be a chance that they could put on new starter trainee at some point in the future.

Cheers

Hi Steve82

I have spoken to my colleague in NSW, she doesn't believe we will have an immediate need, she did say that without a doubt all of the PN sites will have a need this year - but she is not certain if it would be a Trainee role of a Qualified role etc. The general feeling accross the business is that once the new financial year comes around we will have vacancies becoming available, so I would suggest around the July-September period we may see some more movements.

Hi Speedbird,

I will send you a PM to find out some more of your background details - it sounds like you have a good technical mind/background having been a commercial pilot.

Hey Stuart

Does PN ever advertise for shunters? What would a pd for a shunter look like? In the last 8 months I have not seen any shunters advertised...do you call them terminal or yard operators maybe?

They are called terminal operators, Broken hill and Morandoo recently hired some

Seems to me trainee hirings, or hirings in general are going to be a bit thin in the coming months, the grain season has been pretty inadequate.

End of financial year seems to be playing s role along with contract renewals playing some doubt on what depot crewing requirements are.

The west of NSW has had a nice drink, allowing farmers to plant their next wheat crop. Fingers crossed Smile Does PN have many wheat contracts going in NSW? And what effect (if any) has the winding up of the El Zorro business have on NSW? Could PN potentially pick up their contracts?

Even without the rain, there is enough grain to be moved for the next 2, 3 years.
PN has picked up the mineral sands contract from El Zorro but given the stiff competition from the likes of Qube who knows what will happen with the other contracts.

Record grain in the last season has seen a lot of movement in grain contracts, with many depots exploding in size (Look at parkes which have over 110 people with them now. But, when the next big drought happens....

Hey Guys

Just to let you know - we are looking for Trainees in Kalgoorlie, WA - if any of you do apply or would like some more information feel free to PM Me. I can tell you that I believe a few of the roles will be filled with candidates we had on our database and contacted to see if they would still be interested in the opportunities.

Hi Stuart

For the kalgoorlie positions if you did the expression of interest earlier in the year should you just reapply again as well or will they be thrown in the ring as well

Might just reapply anyway

Hi Stuart,

I have PM'd as mention, in regards to the Kalgoorlie positions.

Out of interest - Are any traineeships going to be up for grabs in Adelaide with the expansion of the depot? Or even in Regional SA, for that matter?

Cheers,
Rick.

Hi Tryingtodrive

In speaking with my colleague over in the west who is working with the Depot Manager in filling these roles - she says, 'hold off' - there are a couple of reasons for this so let me explain...

The first one is to what you have mentioned already - with the role being placed on hold, my colleague has contacted previous applicants and will likely be progressing to interviews with some of them. The second reason is location - the depot manager was unfortunately burnt a few years ago by hiring driver who were not local - they all eventually left as Kalgoorlie was not somewhere they wished to live, so the depot manager is not open to anyone outside of Kalgoorlie at the moment - unfortunately.

Hope that helps

Hi Rick

RE Adelaide - there will be in the near future, we have 4 trainee roles for the Adelaide depot which are currently pending approval, we feel that they will come online around August - September, potentially earlier

Hi Stuart,

Apart from chasing my dream of loco driving, which may be near impossible, just as an off the topic question, I'm wondering whether PN takes on engineers (Mechanical engineers/rolling stock engineers). I'm degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering, also have a Masters in Rolling Stock Engineering, which I completed last year. I only have 12 months work experience in engineering of which almost half was with Downer Rail so I'm still considered as someone at a "graduate" level. Since my contract ended with Downer Rail, I've been struggling to find work. I know of one person who works as a Reliability manager with PN coal in Newcastle and he also undertook the masters course.

You can tell that all this education makes me "overqualified" in loco driving.

Got my thanks but no thanks email for the trainee positions in Kalgoorlie. I'm not surprised and not complaining because I do not live in Kalgoorlie and I totally understand the Depot Manager's preference to take on locals instead of those like me who are willing to relocate. I am however surprised that I received the bad news on a Sunday. Sunday is not a working day for HR staff but it is for drivers and shift managers etc, hence the 24/7 working cycle.

Good luck those living in Kalgoorlie who have applied and progressed to the interview.

This might be a stupid question but i would like to know about this. Is a driving license required to get a  job as a trainee loco driver ?
