When traveling through more than two zones passengers are required to have enough myki money (and/or myki pass) to pay for the entire trip before boarding.
They could easily underestimate the required fare if they board at an unstaffed station or waste much more than $6 on a card they might only use once.

What recharging your myki on the train? Or does allowing paying a $20 recharge for a fare from Bendigo to Melbourne make too much sense while on a moving train?

Depends on the fare for each part of the journey as opposed to the fare for the whole journey.

I believe so. There were 73 zones in total I think.

Also, suppose someone touches on at Bendigo and touches off at Diggers Rest, and they're an adult, will they ever be charged a peak fare under Myki?  They never touch off in a zone 1 station.

No, not Digger's Rest, that's not on the list of Myki stations, so let's say Woodend.

Currently I can and do.  My occasional travels are normally covered by a V/Line paper ticket plus zones 1+2.  The days of those tickets are also numbered but (and entirely coincidentally) my need to make the only trip I currently undertake on any sort of regular basis may also be about to end.  The relatively poor coverage of outer residential suburbs by public transport ensure that it is not a realistic option to consider for the daily commute.  A 35 kilometre trip by car which is almost all on 100kph freeways and driven in 35 - 45 minutes requires at least two buses and one train via a U-shaped route of nearer 50 kms and takes 2 - 2½ hours each way.  I call no contest on that.

Re: Melbourne-Warragal-Traralgon, No it doesn't.  It depends on how long you stay in Warragal.  If you touch on while the first ticket is still valid, the total fare will be the same as if you make the whole journey in one go.

If it has expired, then the total will be less!!!!!

I currently get a weekly from Kilmore East to the city.  That's a no-brainer - just get a myki 7-day pass.

Now the interesting bit.....

Once every few weeks we head down to Portarlington, which means a train to Geelong and bus down the peninsula.

Since this is fairly sporadic travel I assume myki money would suit.  

Am I able to have a Myki Pass AND Myki Money on the same card?

Now for the fun stuff.  how do I go about travel from the city to Portarlington?  The myki pass will get me as far as North Geelong.  Do I need to change trains there, "touch-off" to see out the Myki Pass and "touch-on" to kick off the Myki Money, which would then cover a hop to Geelong (touch-off) then the trip on the bus Touch on&off)?

Or would the system be able to recognise this if I just went straight through to Geelong and do the above calculations itself?

No problem for me changing trains or even possibly a bus from North Geelong in to Geelong.  I'm just on the lookout for the cheapest way down.

Any suggestions?

You do not have to change trains at North Geelong and you can continue to Geelong station.

you have paid for a 7 day pass - (zone 1 to zone 3) which equals to $9.60 in myki money

if you travel in off-peak single zone 1 to 5 fare will be $8.82 and if myki takes in to count that you paid $9.60 and then you should not pay any extra top of you 7day pass to travel to Portarlington.

But if you travel in peak time and then it would be $12.60 - $9.60 = $3.00 myki money

A example of this when a customer travels three zones off-peak, 100% of the standard fare will be counted

I've had to read that about six times to *almost* understand it.  

Fares would most likely be Peak as I'd be travelling down after work.  Also I think I'm crossing two zones to get the bus from Geelong to Portarlington.

Okay, So... From my training, which is quite scratchy now as this was a few years ago...

Your trip from Kilmore East to City will be covered by your pass as established and as far back out to North Geelong, On Touch off at Geelong, You should be charged the difference outside of your pass, Which should only be a 2 Hour Zone 4.

On boarding the Bus (or Coach) to Portarlington, The 2 Hour should still be active for that location - Once you get to Portarlington and touch off, It should make the adjustment to charge you for a 2 Hour Zone 4-through-5. On the return trip later that day, You should get the same, 2 Hour Zone 4-5.

I could be very very wrong on this, as the requirement that a passenger carry a single valid ticket for an entire journey, may void the above statement. Really, The person who would know, would be Revenue.

I hope my explanation is a bit clearer than the above. (I've avoided going into the mess of explaning Peak and Off-Peak, to keep it simple)

And if we here can't work it out (and I include those knowledgable members who are employed within the industry as well) what chance does the average passenger stand of understanding the system and how much a trip costs?  And yes it does matter to quite a lot of people that they know how much a trip will cost before making it.

Yes, you're right, except for one thing.

If you have a zone 1-3 pass active, then travel into zone 4 and 5, you are charged for a zone 1-5 '2-hour' ticket less a zone 1-3 '2-hour' ticket (based on peak fares), then adjusted for off peak, concession etc.  Since Zone 1-5 fares have peak and off peak, different amounts will be charged for peak and off peak travel.

The extra you pay for to travel in zones 4 and 5, even in peak periods, is less than a zone 4-5 ticket would cost ($3.00 peak, $2.10 off peak vs. $3.49).

And while that responsibility is now clear if there is no easy way to calculate the fare yourself how are you to know what's left after a trip?  Balances can be checked but not at every single point of exit from the system.  In particular there is no requirement to tag off trams for most journeys meaning the balance is not known until the card is next used.

I don't often advocate American-style justice but I could see some of their no-win-no-fee mob having a field day with Myki.
