New V set

Something for the NSW people, a new high detail V set model to take advantage of the better computing power today.

In MSTS, just to prove that it works. The M car came out to be a framerate murdering 10400 polygons and required the usual after export prodding in polymaster to make it work.

The first candy set!

I really like the superelevated curves in the new version of openrails.

A pair of sets at Central.

Still in progress, more colour schemes to come.

Will it be including actual sounds from a real V Set like the one from Worrybrook Station (http://home.exetel.com.au/cws/worrybrook/)?

A V set through what appears to be a more tropical area - didn't think I'd see that! I quite like the setting it's been put in.

It reminds me of Karamja in RuneScape, but let's not go there... Mr. Green

That's a very impressive piece of work; congratulations to all involved!

From memory, the team-ALCO Taits weighed in at around 6000 polys for the arch-roofed trailer cars through to about 8000 polys for the clerestory-roofed motors. A great deal of tweaking in Polymaster was needed, and I'm sure you know just what a juggling act that can be to get it into MSTS!

I haven't yet explored Open Rails, but I do wonder how much of a challenge it is to get an operable setup. It's all moot to me though, as I can't find my MSTS disks to reload it on my latest computer!

Well done!

Cheers,
Matt

Hello Matt,

You don't have to have MSTS installed to be able to setup a fully working Open Rails system. Peter Newell has done a lot of pioneering work. Peter and I made a couple of short 'demo' routes to test OR as a 'stand-alone' system - Craven Timber Railway and Manning River Breakwall Railway. As far as more expansive routes go, we were able to run Tweed Railway V2 quite successfully under OR - see here:

http://www.tweed.coalstonewcastle.com.au/route/route-install/

Once you've got it all working OK, you can expand on that and add additional stock and/or routes to suit - see notes under 'expanding your world'.

A bloke in Wollongong has successfully loaded and run just about all of the current NSWGR steam era routes in OR without major drama, just a few tweaks needed here and there.

The latest OR is version 0.9 only released recently.

Have a go at it, you might be quite surprised at how good it is. OR doesn't have an editor yet, so you can't build new routes (currently we're using MSTS RE to do that), and new stock can be built using the old stalwart TSM.

Not sure when it will be finished at this stage. I'll post it here when it is.

Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the new colour scheme yet, it might have to wait untill there's a few more of them and I can go to Sydney to take some pictures. It looks pretty weird.

I'm not sure yet. I'll try and get together something that's reasonably realistic. It will have a proper cabview, I found some good reference pictures for the modelling.

Thanks Matt!
Openrails is really good from a modelling perspective. You just export it and it works. No questions asked or errors given. No need to muck around with subobjects or alpha sorting. I think I have just about as much fun building trains as I do driving them, so it certainly makes the process a lot more fun.

I wasn't planning on it. Since the doors on the real one are opened by the passengers, and there arn't any passengers in MSTS, there didn't seem like much point.

And yeech! What have they done to it! The horror!
