New locos at UGL

Was always going to happen because the redirected CF44s were never going to be up to PNs standards . They are intended to be an NR replacement with a few more herbs and spices . Thing is that the MkI (92 class) had them to start with so why UNads went away from them is anyones guess . Wonder if it was to keep up with the EDI Jones' ?

CRL001 is at UGL today wearing yellow paint on the front with orange or red stripes on the pilot that look similar to QRN/Aurizon units.

So does anyone know if this will become another 6020, or have CRL actually purchased it?

I find it rather odd that CRL bothered to put mock-ups on their website of the "CRL" class if they had no intention to purchase any.

......... I take it there is no way to get a web cam installed in Goninan's spray booth ?

CRL,GWA and Freight Liner all expressed interest in possibly purchasing C44Aci locos over 12 months ago but none actually committed to purchasing due to many reasons, example their being a down turn in traffic or not getting a particular contract so they never purchased and as mentioned earlier UGL built this current crop of locos purely on speculation, maybe PN and Aurizon can now purchase these locos at a discounted price !

Discounted price , yep funny you should say that . Maybe it's a buyers market ATM and they're holding out for the discount . If there is a downturn in business they can affort to wait .

Now is the time of year when businesses make a last minute purchase to help minimise tax, or defer a purchase so that it makes this years profit higher (or more likely losses lower). I suspect UGL have a confirmed order that will allow management to count it as a sale in 2012/13 financial year, while final payment and delivery will occur in 2013/14. (building a loco and selling it the same financial year counts as a good stat for a manager).

Well i think there will be plenty of red ink being used this financial year at EDI -5x LDPs built with no purchaser and i suspect same scenario at UGL with at least 8 possibly more locos built with no current purchaser signed up.Thats one hell of a end of financial year loco fire sale for any potential purchaser to look into !

In theory should be CF4407-CF4410 (possibly with 11 and 12 unless they're still at Thirlmere). Waiting to go on hire to their new customers.

If only there was some kind of handy photo gallery feature on a railway enthusiast website in which people could see photos of locomotives when they wanted to...?

I'm just north of Brisbane so even if I jumped in the Ferrari I would have trouble getting there quick enough.  Smile

LOL , ,   Smile   Thanks for that.  I do check in on your Flickr photos occasionally too , very nice stuff and thank you for posting.  Being a good way north of any 4' 8" trackage the internet is my most likely way of checking in on new locos such as NR's and their derivatives.

I used to pop down to Acacia Ridge in the days when saturday afternoons (National Rail era) were quite quiet and crews would occasionally give a guided tour / supervised photo session.  I really should get a good scanner and digitise them.  I have only just got my first digital camera and haven't get anything to post as yet.

Seen a photo on facebook of CRL001 painted in Aurizon livery.  Not Aurizon loco numbers on it, but still with CRL 001 number boards.

Perhaps they've picked up some/all of the surplus C44's for use on their future N/W NSW coal traffic for Whitehaven?

Whitehaven Coal Quarterly Report - June FY2013

"Whitehaven's first Aurizon train will commence operation on 1 August 2013 as part of a 30t axle load trial. The Aurizon train unit will be fitted with special monitoring equipment to assess the impact of heavier locomotives on the Gunnedah Basin rail track. This trial is the first stage of a joint work program with ARTC to increase the maximum payload of Gunnedah Basin trains from 6,300t to in excess of 8,000t from Q1 2015".

I saw the new Aurizon C44 outside at UGL last Sunday. Maybe it will be doing the trial.

So much for that theory.

Thanks for the info.

So , what TAL perway exists in the area to be tested ? It would be interesting to see how it goes with the perway that's lighter than much of the Hunter coal system . It may kick off the end of this fuel levels farce with C44ACis on the ARTC network elsewhere . Vine reckons that we may be closer to seeing 93s allowed to run at 100 km/h with the intermediate fuel level and if sanity prevails maybe more with reduced speeds . Dunno if we'd get 80 with say 12500 and dare I say it the full 14000 at 65-70 ?
Roll on the trials and don't be surprised if the sky remains suspended ...

The CRL in Aurizon livery out the front at UGL also has CRL 002 (or was it 003?) painted on the side of the cab.

Are Aurizon leasing the new locos from CRL in a similar arrangement to the LDP's?
