Vline A class

Indeed I was referring to El Zorro

Possibly with their own locos on way  the A's might not be so needed  but if Vline hasnt a use for them  and they are still maintained and servicable then I would have thought  10,000 hp worth of grunt might be highly attractive..or even 1 or 2.  Theyre already certified all over Vic .  Conversely this sort of loco(s) might make tendering for particular contracts a more viable concern.

I like the A's but at the end of the day its just business and they are bits of plant that provide grunt. They can still perform, they are more powerful than the S's and T's  , all in all , still a very useful engine in the right circumstances.

Added to that they won't have the 80km/h speed limit applied, on the regional fast rail network.

I should hope that Sir Harold Clapp can finally rest in peace after more than 60 years of passenger service. Does ARHS Williamstown have any room left?

The fact that A60 was also the first Victorian bulldog loco makes it an ideal candidate for static display; if anyone thinks it's a waste of a loco, I'm sure defective parts could be swapped into a preserved A60, there are probably heaps of clapped out 645s out there which could be used for static display, while A60's prime mover can live on in another loco. If A60 was preserved, it would still leave ten more A classes out there.

Im hopeful that the Vline A's get to live on , if for a while as servicable units.   Im not sure in any way tha tPN's will exist much past their nominated usefulness ( PN being PN )

This afternoon N455-A62-A66 were transferred from Newport Workshops to Southern Cross, A66 will reportedly be based in the bank sidings as a standby loco.

What is the likely future of these locos ?

Would Vline take the view that they are essentially paid up 'spares"  i.e  Just mothabll them and start  em up if needed as emergncy power or would they look to getting them off their books and put out to tender for disposal ?

Would any of the exisiting  Preservation outfits  look to acquiring one ?  What might last 2-5 years in day to day service would last a lot longer  working the weekends etc Might give some of these mobs a whole different scope of operating with a loco that doesnt require turning etc and already able to run all the rails in the state.

Id like to think the PN A's might have another life but thats being unrealistic ( sigh ).  The Gov however have a different slant to things ( one hopes )

ARHS are using one on a tour to Maryborough on July 13, carriages supplied by Steamrail I believe.

Advised from a reliable source that from 25th May an 'A' class will operate the 16:15 Bacchus Marsh on a fortnightly on Fridays basis.

Feel free to report in here accordingly.

I think the idea of an A class to QUBE was sqaushed. They seem to have other plans.

It was actually the 1726 down, replacing the push/pull P set.

Has A66 or any other V line A worked any trains recently?

Cheers Peter.

The 1615 down BHM last Friday had an N on it instead of an A, which was of course the day I'd arranged to be able to shoot it.

I think A66 is hanging around the Dudley St end of the Bank Sidings though - it's been there consistently on the number of times I've been past recently.

A66 has a regular gig hauling a Pass to Bacchus Marsh on a Friday Afternoon (usually the 1615 departure from Spencer St), It then returns to Melbourne later that evening (departing from Bacchus Marsh roughly around 1915) light engine with 1 or 2 N class or sometimes with an empty cars H set in tow. This happens most Fridays (despite earlier reports that it would be every fortnight only) but as the line is in bustitution mode over the school holidays for RRL works, the next running most likely will not be until the 19th of July.

Thanks for the info, it's good to hear it's still being used. I believe there is a railtour next Saturday. I might try and get out for that.

I'd like to have booked, but a prior engagement said no.
How many bookings did ARHS need to make the trip viable?
