Qube ready to take over Maryvale service to Gippsland

    Announced today or thereabouts the new service underway 1335 Saturday from Nth Dynon will see the first QUBE Paper Train depart with S313 and G515 having the honours. The rake will consist of 6 CQRX wagons, 1 CQIY wagon and 17 CQXY wagons.

    T356 dragged a rake of wagons into North Dynon from Somerton today 28/6/2013 which maybe for this service.

    I hope it works out for Qube.

    One question however, is an UP?? departure from North Dynon to Melbourne via Lloyd Street still available or will the train have to run via the W track?

    First 5 wagons on this train are for the Deni. The remaining 17 are for the Maryvale Service.
    Locomotives are still not confirmed as yet.

    G512 and S313 will I am told lead the today and are currently attached to the train in North Dynon.  Go down to take a look around lunchtime.

    It seems to be running on a completely different timetable to the PN service. PN's train was very reliable but this one is all over the shop - through Flinders St at a different time each day this week (in both directions). Also, the last two nights have produced 2 x PN X class on a load that looked suspiciously like the paper train. Last night (4/7) the PN train passed through on the Up at about 2300, about an hour after Qube went through on the Down. Are there now two trains??

    PN's one was all over the shop the last two weeks, on account due to RRL works at South Kensington. It had to pass through Nth Dynon instead of going around it.

    Loco combos so far:
    G512-S313, G512-S313, G515-X31, G512-S313

    Metro have also put a restriction on the times the Qube service can operate in the suburban area due to 9'10" containers (SW198/2013). They can only operate between 21:00 (9pm) and 04:00 (4am).

    Sounds about right - if you slow a freight train right down to a crawl, doesn't make sense to try and slot it in when a frequent service is operating, everything will just get backlogged!

    Containers are the same. I can only assume the rolling stock is different???

    I must remember to copy/paste part of a notice that was recently circulated, stating that the "Toll Pad" at Maryvale will now operate 24 hours per day - I can only guess that Qube are operating shorter trains and making more frequent trips?

    Thanks for that. The last few nights the train has passed through Flinders St on the Up after 2300, so it seems to have settled on a 'regular' timetable.

    PN was extremely reliable when it ran the train, noting that the last couple of weeks saw late running for reasons explained elsewhere. For the 18 months that I observed the train before that, it ran on time on the Up virtually every day. Late running was very rare, which was great for summer photography. This coming summer may not be as interesting, if the train is now running *four* hours later than previously.

    depending on where the product is being exported dictates the height of the container that is used. Some countries only use certain height containers.

    On Sat/Sun 9472 is scheduled through Caulfield on the up at 1813, despite the 10 min suburban frequency for both the Dandenong and Frankston lines the 20 km/h freight restriction has very little impact. 9472 gets routed via the up Caulfield local line and all following up suburbans go via the Caulfield through line until the 9472 clears Richmond Jnc.

    Not wanting to derail this thread, maybe a split into a separate container discussion?  

    I understand the logistics behind different containers.  I was unaware that higher containers existed and were used in Australia.
    I have only seen the 8'6" and 9'6" boxes.
    Does anyone have a pic in rail use of the higher containers?

    Two container trains through Flinders St tonight (9/7), one at about 2340 and the other at 0015. The second one seemed to be operated in push/pull mode, with 1 loco at the front and 3 at the rear.

    Your push-pull train is the rice train that is running to Tocumwal at present thanks to RRL works.
