Thanks for posting Shed_Rat. The vehicle looks Russian or Eastern European.

Will Railcorp still be using its 620 and AK sets?

Is there any timeframe for Roger the Railcar to be out on the network yet or is it too early just now to tell?

An odd looking machine. It's nice to have some variety, but I hope ML070 doesn't end up on the scrap heap having only just been converted.

A bit of info towards the end of the thread http://www.railpage.com.au/f-p1825161.htm indicates there are two Roger 800's, also a bit of other relevant info regarding how these vehicles will replace others such as ML070, the AK's etc.

I am trying to find some info on the Mermec MTPV1 which is one of two machines bought from an Itallian company.
According to RailCorp TOC Waiver 106-521 this machine will be on test until September 2013.

From what I can gather this is a diesel Hydraulic vehicle powered by a MTU engine coupled to a Voith Turbo T211re.4+KB190 transmission.

This transmission is a beefed up electronically controlled version of the old 600-900 class Voith's.

I will try and access this track patrol machine so I can get more data. I am assuming it has two traction packs but need to confirm.

I will keep Railpage posted if possible.

Why did they spend the money converting ML070 only to order new track recording cars a short time later?

It was a trial, which ultimately failed. There's another 620 set stored at Chullora to be turned into another 070, although given how poorly the first one worked out, it's not going to happen.

Oh yes, I can't deny it is good to see a 620 live on in some form, but it's a shame that once the two new railcars are ready, it will be withdrawn and likely junked. ML039 is to be retained as a "standby", iirc?

Sorry. It was the new one I saw at Springwood the other day. The one based on the 620/720 set used to do an inspection run to Mt Vic and return every Tuesday. It was exactly my thoughts why Railcorp did not just purchase new Inspection Cars in the first place. Trouble is that it seems Railcorp cannot go past trying to play around with something they have on hand which is actually quite penny wise and pound foolish in the end. Bit like that 47 class test car which was ditched fairly quickly.

Interesting photo of the new inspection car whilst still in Italy equiped with side buffers and drawhooks but with NSW Transport decals etc.

MTPV1 has been undergoing various tests, mainly during night time possessions. It did venture out to Springwood on a Friday day time for testing on the 1/33 grade.

The Roger 800s have been in the pipeline for a very long time. In the mean time, ML070 was modified to enable the foot patrols to be reduced as an interim measure. Removing the foot patrols frees up paths for more trains to run.
MTPV1 will do MTP and AK car duties, MTPV2 will do MTP only, with provision  to upgrade later if required. ML 039 and ML070 will be retired, AK cars will go fully to ARTC.

For now, more test running on MTPV1. It will appear in daylight on Saturday 27/7 Doonside - St Marys area. In the coming weeks it may test on the daylight MTP run paths

Thanks for the extra information!

For those of us who have yet to get a satisfactory photo of ML070, is there anything you could suggest?

I was told that once the second car comes out the first one will go in the works for some mods such as getting rid of the effluent tank which is inside the car under the fridge and which will allow for a bigger fridge to be installed which will be adequate to hold sufficient food for longer trips. At the moment the first car cannot travel far. Someone had a holiday in Italy instead of doing their job and oversighting such issues.

I saw this new vehicle a couple of hours ago at Harris Park on the track that was covered by a landslide.
