    Will the D3 be part of the roster for the Drive a Steam Train experience days at the VGR? Or will it remain just with the VGR's own locomotives?

    Given none of the VGR's own locomotives are in service I'd say you'll have a chance at driving a cube.

    Just a general question and forgive me if its been answered before.

    What would be required for the Steamrail consist from Melbourne to run all the way to Maldon?

    I understand there is a cross over facing Melbourne, could the Melbourne train pull into the platform at Castlemaine, VGR locos drop on and away they go?

    The cross over has to be used under total occupation. It can be done, DERMPAV did it a few months ago when they ran 58RM all the way through.

    On Saturday just gone, D3 639 ran on the VGR's railway for the first time since the old girl was transferred there back on the 22nd June. Saturday's first run was to qualify a couple of VGR Volunteers on the loco, the second run was to assess a couple of SRV Volunteers on the railway. The weather really turned foul for the second trip, but fun was had by all. The old girl is a slippery one in the wet.

    J 549 was steamed up Thursday and had a bit of a roll around the Maldon yard to free her up.

    A trip to Maldon late yesterday afternoon saw J549 in steam, towing Y133 up the hill into Maldon Station.
    They were returning from a trip to Muckleford.

    She was minus a fair bit of cladding & smoke deflectors.

    Last Wednesday (20 Nov) while at work I was lucky enough to see the VGR train running with double J's.
    J515 was leading J549 on the up trip and they swapped places for the return journey.
    The arvo trip was a repeat of the earlier run.
    J549 was having a final tune up prior to undergoing her exam today (Sat 23 Nov).

    Just as I was heading off to play cricket today, J549 came rolling down into Castlemaine with a lengthy train made up of the current Driver Experience train, 3 or 4 E cars and a ZL on the back.  

    Lets hope all went well and she is back on the roster very soon.

    Been a while since the VGR thread was updated, so here I go.

    Sadly, just a few days prior to the official re-launch of over hauled loco J549 in late January, the man who had his name on the side of the loco passed away.
    Brian Frewin a long time member, tireless volunteer and Life Member who held many positions in his time on the VGR lost a short battle with cancer.
    On Australia Day his family were present when the re-launch took place at Castlemaine with the Brian Frewin nameplates being bolted back on the cab sides.

    As can be seen elsewhere, K 160 was transported by road to Steamrail's Newport Depot in mid January for a major overhaul.
    When being prepared for Steamrail's Open Day on the march long weekend, she blew her main internal steam pipe.
    That didn't quite stop her as she was towed around for a few runs each day.

    Y 133 was the main loco running over summer due to the high fire danger, which also saw a few running days cancelled.
    March saw J 549 return to running until the lifting of fire bans last monday.

    J 549 will now go in for a check up and a bit of maintanance after being run in.

    At the Steam trains for Kids event last weekend, K 190 was in steam and parked in the dock road at Maldon and used for footplate visits and a bit of whistle blowing.
    It was parked over the pit at the end of the day in preperation for running now that fire bans are over.

    Last Sunday also saw a visit from a local politician and a few photo's taken.

    With Easter now upon us, it will see trains running every day from Good Friday to Easter Monday, including the Good Friday evening Wine, Beer & Cheese Platter train departing Maldon at 7pm and returning about 10pm.
    I see that the DSCR have there group coming along again.

    Listed throughout the year are a number of events including a celebration later in the year of a decade since the opening of the line into Castlemaine.

    According to FB and other sources a derailment occurred in Castlemaine yesterday near the Maldon-Maryborough junction.  Looks like the trailing truck of K190's tender and some carriages are in the dirt.  All rolling-stock is upright and no one injured.
    VGRs homepage says: Unfortunately our train de-railed today (15th June 2014) close to Castlemaine. None of our passengers or crew were injured. No trains will operate on Wednesday 18th June while we recover the train and conduct track repairs, services are likely to be disrupted for some time. Please refer to our website for details of services over the coming weeks.

    The VGR have announced that trains will run tomorrow (Sunday 22nd June) between Maldon & Castlemaine.

    Thanks to many volunteers from various rail groups and from within the VGR the track has been repaired.
