Tangara seating trial

    From early  July, Sydney Trains will be launching a seating trial on Tangara trains to test if wider aisles and extra standing room will lead to faster boarding and alighting during peak periods at busy CBD stations.
    The new seating configuration will be trialled on two Tangara train carriages on the Western and North Shore lines. The trial includes the removal of 16 seats from each of the two carriages, increasing capacity by up to 80 people, or around 15 per cent for the two carriages.

    first of all welcome to the forum.
    second of all (not wanting to sound mean or anything) we all know about that in this forum
    thirdly if you use the search function (btw its broken so i'll give you this one. next time have a look around before posting a new thread) you will find posts on this in other threads

    now i shall give my opinions. although i have not been on one of these trains. the two by two seating is a really good idea. from my experience in the 3x2 seating everyone seems to not want to sit in the middle seat next to a stranger. unless its a train packed full people will usually opt for other seats or stand if there is room. the 2x2 elimates this problem by forcing people to either seat next to a stranger or stand. it also gives more walking room for people boarding and alighting in theory making it faster although the stairs are single person only.

    I'm not aware of a thread on this subject.  It is worthy of one.  I was thinking of starting one myself.

    I agree that 2+2 has some advantages, not least of which being a wider aisle, I positively hate the longitudinal seating idea!  The latter means space under seats cannot be used for feet, for a start.

    it is mentioned in other threads IIRC.

    anyways back onto seats. the 2x2 seating should be considered in more services where there is demand eg peak Illawarra. damm to hard to get a seat at Hurstville. luckily I trave the other way. but on ocassions that i do travel to the city its like sardines. no space to do anything

    The seating trial doesn't solve the fact, you still have to move down the stairs single file to get off and the issue of getting passengers to move from the vestibule area.

    i did mention the stairs issue. they should put the trial on a Waratah with its wider stairs. one of those new ones comming out of China should have 2x2 seating on all eight cars with 3 seaters ready to be put in once the trial is over.

    The sets involved in the trial are T77/78 and will run on the Western (Penrith and Richmond) and North Shore Lines.

    Car numbers are 5131 on T77 for the longitudinal seats and 5134 on T78 for the 2x2.

    What sort of a welcome is that to a new member?  Who are you to be giving anything to anyone? Talk about self appointed forum Gestapo.  And we don't all know about it so don't speak for all of us.  No one has asked you to do that and I don't appreciate a rude bozo like you speaking on my behalf.  Anyone can post anything anytime they want within the rules.  Interesting you IIRC something was posted about it previously, rather than actaully pointing to it and then we have to read your pontifications based on nothing!

    I also knew nothing about this so thank you to the OP for bringing this up.

    I think a 2 x 2 seating trial is a great idea... and I don't get the linkage between the width of the stairs and this trial. Yes I understand that the stairs limit the rate for deboarding/boarding but the bigger issue is providing more capacity for standing room in the upper/lower vestibules and away from the entry areas.

    Again thanks Lucky88 and ignore the gestapo...

    One thing I did forget to ask is whether they have provided handles in the upper/lower vestibules for those standing to hold onto? I suspect that would take some doing but Sydney trains need more of them...

    Yep. There are five poles (I think) across each deck with longitudinal seating.

    Having travelled on these carriages a few times, I think they're maybe not so bad in peak hour but they're a pain the rest of the time. What customer wants to spend their journey having other passengers sitting in the longitudinal seating staring at them while they're sitting in the 2x2?

    I think the 2x2 on both sides is the better option of the two.

    Sydney Trains could conduct pole dancing classes on each deck when the crowds have lessened!!!

    Will help Gladys balance the budget.

    Not having seen these cars, could you please advise whether the modifications are on both the upper and lower decks, or on one deck only.
