8151-8160-48153-48127 with a grain train set of mostly NGPFs arrived at Kooragang between 02:00 and 04:00 this morning and stowed. Around 06:30 a crew arrived and run the 81s around the 48s and run the power around the train. They then pushed the train into Cargill and left part there and part back on the branch beside Cormorant Rd.
I'm wondering how often does this train operate? I've never seen a grain train at Kooragang before.

I believe I've seen the same train operated by El Zorro in the past too, although I couldn't say how often it used to run? I believe Cargill used to maintain two rail tractors (not Victorian RT's, but a similar concept) there to unload grain wagons, but I'm not sure if they still do.

Not really all that regular, maybe once a week when they are crushing canola seed. It always comes from the south.

Thanks Raichase and Termite. Looks like a bit of work to catch a photo of this one. I'm wishing I'd taken the camera to work, but didn't think I'd need it on Saturday night shift. It would have made a nice pic under the coal conveyers in the fog this morning!

Hi
Did anyone see C508 on tuesday going towards Sydney. Through Uranquinty about 15.30.
It had about 20 grain wagons, and a guard van at each end. Very old and a lot of graffiti.
Just haven't seen a guard van for years and wanted to know where they were going?
Just a sticky beak.

What you would have seen would be the ARTC ballast rake, C508 had to pick the wagons up and take them to Junee.

The van you're thinking of is a ballast plough. Used to be used for crews, but I don't think it is anymore...

Your on the money!!
Just opened new "MP" mag page 14 shows S302 with the rake at Winton.
So the plough is under the waggons.

There shunting unit was CAR1 a modified 48 class unit (modified in that it could only operate at slower speeds than a standard 48 class) from memory it only had 4 throttle notches instead of the standard 8 in all others and i think it was originaly 4817 which was last seen at Junee workshops awaiting scrapping due to a rusted out frame.

My mistake, I was thinking of the two shunters used by the Grain Elevators Board at Carrington. Of course, you're right about CAR1, which is indeed in pieces in Junee to be scrapped.

Luke, speaking with no authority on the subject whatsoever, let me suggest that the 421 was not working as it wasn't needed? I've seen this happen on empty trains before to conserve fuel, and to reduce the noise and vibration on the driving-station-loco. I notice the Aurizon grain train will, when empty, power with the rear two or three units, with the lead loco quiet. The last run of the Bomen fuel train did this as well, the lead X was being used to drive from, but wasn't powering, whilst the trailing two X's were.
