In my travels, I have noticed that around Coolac, NSW* near Gundagai alongside the Hume Hwy there seems to be some disused (?) rail track lying around in sections. Does anyone know what line(s) this was, and how long it has been disused for?

* You know, the town that has a Hitachi carriage in a front yard.

This was the Cootamundra - Tumut line. Some track was washed away in the 1984 floods and was never repaired. The line is officially listed as "abandoned".

Now now David,
i was once in the technical department in RIC Wagga and managed the records on the old lines such as this one, we have to call it by its technical name of "Service Suspended" this way we give small towns hope that they will one day see a rail service moving again (don't laugh im trying to be serious!!)

Ah, yes Ross, RIC may call it "Service suspended", but AUSLIG or NSW Department of Lands (or whoever does our topographic maps now) calls it abandoned or disused...

Will be a bit hard to resume services on this line. A little matter of the Hume Highway bypass of Coolac that passes over the old line on a big long embankment, as well as the southbound carriageway being built on top of the alignment just north of Tumblong about 20 years ago would need to be addressed.

And that's before all the other issues get addressed, bridges and so on.

RIC can dream that one day they might get handouts of the magnitude that the RTA does.

Legally it classified as "Service Suspended" unless an Act is passed to formally close it, even though it will never see a train again.
