Signal faults

  Peter Spyker Train Controller

I don't think a day goes by anymore without delays on one or more of Melbourne's lines due to signal faults. Tonight it was the Northern Loop, with delays around half an hour or more. I don't remember it being this constantly bad in the past twenty years.

Has the government cut funding for maintenance? Have the signals reached their end of life?

How can Napthine possibly justify spending $8 billion or more on a tollway when they can't even get the railway working properly?

I believe the previous government expected the operator to fund maintenance.

It wasn't only tonight 9/7 it was last night and this morning too and it wasn't even raining. Tonight was such a shambles that even the particularly irritating Metro Mouth of 4/5 at Flinders Street was (almost) silenced.

Its not the signals its the track and the amount of extra trains running on them, don't forget the signals are all operated by track circuits.
Lets say you go to thailand and get a chickie to run over your back barefoot and nudie, it wouldn't be too bad.
Then the next night you get greedy and get 10 chickies to run up and down your back barefoot and nudie all night and some of the chickies are heavier than others
then your back wont be too good after a while.

Most signal faults are caused by a short in the track circuit which holds it "down" It could be the smallest of metal shavings up to a broken rail.
the fitters who have to try and find the fault do a great job, sometimes they just use a file to get things right or they have to look for a wire that has come loose as in a "floating"
track fault, these faults can be hard to find. So next time you sit at a platform look at the overhead, that is 1500v, it runs the trains, The grey or silver boxes next to the track are pushing 110v through the track to operate signals. The thing is the maintenance load is increasing because of extra amount "chickies" running over the track ! Smile and wearing out the rail and joints.

I reckon it was a fantastic example of how track circuits operate/fail. This place needs a good laugh.

...and more signalling faults on the Upfield line, this morning. The system is falling apart.

Could not agree more.  This is the symptom of a lack of longer term investment in renewal.  The system cannot last forever on 40 year old equipment.  I also suspect (and based on information provided to me from within the industry) the renewals are not always up to specification.

Victoria is a disgrace when it comes to public transport upgrades, pure and simple. We are building a road tunnel only the Victorian Government and private enterprise want which will wipe out a "generation" of public transport funding.  We deserve to be called Mexicans.

Upfield line signals again tonight! This is pathetic. How many new signalling systems could the east-west tollway build?

Mmmmm..........lurid fantasies ! keeps me going Smile

Rats and bats don't help the cause either, the ratties rustle around relay boxes because they are nice and warm and upset the wires. and everyone knows what damage Barry the bat did at glenferrie !

Craigieburn and Upfield line both suspended (since re-opened) due to signalling.
A funding boost would be helpful right about now.

There's an election on. We're about to be non-core, pinky-swear, needle in the eye promised all sorts of new shiny stuff we'll never get.

Well, none. Because if they don't build East West link, they're going to waste the money on that every more pointless white elephant Metro Rail.
