Leongatha line memories

Where is the Y Class going to be running ?
I probably won't get there, I'm planning on getting some shots of the Steamrail Snow Train next weekend.

This was probably you driving in this photo taken from the Kongwak Bena road bridge. I only just got there in time. I could hear the train whistle as I approached the bridge, didn't even have time to park the bike and get off.

Ha yes I saw you sitting on your bike. The four of us sitting up the front mentioned you must have hooked it to get there. I saw you wave to us. The horn was for the kids in the train they loved the echo.
Anyone who hasn't driven a DERM can do so as a DCT and I highly recommend it.
Darcy, I didn't think I was going to make it so I didn't message you however I'm pretty confident I'll be there this weekend.

After I left here I rode back toward Nyora and went to have a look at the old Railway Reservior

There is a little tourist information board and a picnic table

This is the reservior

When I was a kid Dad took me here and there was still a structure leading out to the brick tower in the water

I found where it started from, a concrete foundation in the dam wall

I found a rail photo site courtesy of Weston Langford. Follow this link & go to the search section. Type in a location and many photos will appear. Here's some examples below of the South Gippsland line.

For the first time in around 30 years a train has been on the far end of 5 road at Korumburra.
On August 20th the 30 years was broken after many hours of changing sleepers and fixing the track.

It appears the line between Cranbourne and KooWeeRup has been cut in another place besides the bus station toilet block at KooWeeRup. Was driving along the Berwick Cranbourne road a couple of days ago and I noticed that roadworks at the development at Cassey Fields have obliterated the line. The level crossing with tracks still embedded in the roadway is still there but beyond that, -  just a lot of earthworks. I thought that there was still a slight hope that the Cranbourne line would be one day extended to Cassey Fields. I guess that if that is going to happen then the terminus would be on the northern side of the road.

The latest draft growth corridor plans by the state government show that they now want to extend the rail as far as Clyde. See http://gaa.vic.gov.au/growth_corridor_planning/ for details (Chapter 6 - The Melbourne South East Growth Corridor Plan). I also believe that the railway at Berwick-Cranbourne Road would be grade separated, not sure where I read this though so I can't back it up with a reference.

What Is going on here ? doesn't look like It's all roadworks.

Yes for the line to reopen through here the level crossings at Narre Warren Cranbourne Road and Berwick Cranbourne Road would need to be grade separated.
Diverting the South Gippsland Highway via the Cranbourne Bypass route (along side Camron Street) this would take the pressure off High Street, so the level crossing at High Street could be reopened for the short to medium term.

Sinking Cranbourne Station would be the ultimate solution, ridding High Street and Camms Road crossings, train stabling would be moved to Clyde.

Hi Everyone.

I came across Railpage and in turn this thread quite by accident.  I am interested in creating an all-working historical model railway in Gippsland.  I have been looking for a building for a couple of years.  These included places like Coal Creek, Wonthaggi State Coal Mine and buildings in various towns including Korumburra Station.  At this point in time I have had no luck.  Recently I visited Leongatha Station for the first time although I have been to this town many times before. Restoration of the main room seems to be in a state of limbo. I heard that the Gippsland Shire Council is looking to do something with it.  How would you all feel about being able to relive history by driving trains, controlling stations, operating mines, sailing ships, etc?  I am looking for support to make this happen.

Below is my web address where you'll find a video on what I have in mind.  The video is of a Victorian club which has a timetable operated layout.

They wanted to turn it into a youth center. but i don't think SGR are letting them but i could be wrong.

Thanks for your reply.  Yes I heard the bit about something to do with youth but the info I received was that Council were looking into this and SGR was not standing in their way.  But best I speak to someone at Council level next week.

I was on the trip with my dad, I was 14 at the time. No one died or got hurt. I think they were local kids, they loved it. Wink

I understand the old Bass River trestle was replaced with a steel bridge some time after.

What happened to the Pioneer cars? Any still around? I have some more slides of the same cars on a K Class trip to Wonthaggi and also on the last train to Waubra, all about 1965.

There's a bunch of the pioneer cars stored at Newport, not sure how many etc.
