No chance.
There are people here who simply detest that idea, and will argue ad nauseum against it.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with people paying through the tax system a minimal amount per week contribution to public transport to fund a ticketless public transport system. Amount paid can be based on the postcode of where a tax payer lives....someone living in the Melbourne suburban area pays slightly more than, say, a Mildura resident.

Fare-free travel is a nice idea but I just don't think it will ever get off the ground - the public would get too shirty I feel.

Myki was a really good concept but like nearly everything to do with public transport in Victoria, it's been subject to political interference and progressively 'down-scaled' so as to become the giant pile of poop that it is now.  The removal of key aspects of the functionality such as temporary ticketing, the refusal to take cash, genuine 'one ticket' use on V/Line and the general unreliability of the system have all wreaked what could have otherwise been a good system.  I think it's also obvious to the casual observer that the wrong contractor was picked to install and operate the system - it just won't run the way it's supposed to. Why on earth Bachelor picked a group with no previous experience in installing or operating such systems is still a mystery.

There's other things wrong too like a seeming inability of bus drivers to fix faulty validators, validators constantly dropping in and out on trams, wreaked screens through vandalism or weathering making it unreadable, delayed top-ups through the automated system etc that the government either refuses to acknowledge or blames on third parties (or the user).  However, as I've said before, we have a State government with little to nil interest in improving the public transport network so I think we just have to put up with the system as it is and resolve as individuals to try and make it work in our favour... somehow.

So, if I board a Vline train at Sunshine for Ardeer, I will be charged for a trip to BENDIGO unless the conductor does his job properly.

I would like to point out  - if you're on a peak train and touch on at Sunshine and travel to Ballarat  - and then you touch of at Ballarat  - you get charged a off-peak fare (zone 2 -  8 )

There are some trains from Marshall/Sth Geelong/Geelong that regularly run through to Traralgon, and vice versa.
As an example, what about passengers who are travelling through from Geelong to, say, Traralgon.
Q1: Are they expected to leave the train, dash to a touchy feely machine at Southern Cross, touch off, then touch back on again, and madly dash back to Platorm 8South (I think it is) and (hopefully) reclaim their seats?
Q2: How would Myki charge the passenger if the passenger from Geelong stayed on the Traralgon bound train at Southern Cross (or merely left the train and stayed on the platform if requested to leave the train for cleaning purposes) and not touched off and on again?
Q3: If a conductor forgets his/her ticket checking duties, does that mean that a passenger may actually get a free ride on the 2nd sector of their rather long trip if he or she doesn't leave the Southern Cross platform to touch off, then on again?

If you leave from Spencer Street Myki has no way of knowing if you are on a country train. The conductor checking your card must be very important to the process. Have noticed on the Ballarat line that the 3G coverage has improved allowing more Myki cards to be checked.

I had purchased a new card about 3 months ago from 7/11 and last week just wasn't working properly. Yesterday it wouldn't work at all.. The station staff checked it to find it was dead..
