    Hi guys,

    Can anyone shed some light on the running of the Long Island steel train? I seem to have the worst luck getting any photos of it! Take today, for example: just missed two light engines on the down movement at Tyabb at 13:15, and expecting them to return through Tyabb at 16:30 I returned at 15:40 I waited around until 17:30...and nothing! No sight of it.

    Any tips or feedback on it would be greatly appreciated! This isn't the first time I've tried to photograph it, without any success....

    9556 certainly went through Richmond on time this evening at around 1850, I can only imagine it departed LI on an earlier path (probably 1455) but then sat in the Caulfield through siding for longer than normal.
    The scheduled weekday path ex LI is about 1630, and on weekends about 1745.

    Today's train was on time out of Frankston on the down at 1:30pm, up came back at 5:00pm once again through Frankston.

    Looks like the BLs are the regular performers, they were on the train last Saturday too.

    Often sits in the siding at Caulfield until 18:35 most weekdays. Easy photograph the up train in the metro area once daylight savings returns.

    You and me both and I live within 1km of the line!  I lost count of how many times the trains came through slightly ahead of schedule when I was "on time" or something less usual was on and I didn't have a camera.  I could suggest that I gave up using Coles in town because of the number of times I kicked myself as the steelie rolled through just as I drove past but in truth I simply use another supermarket nearer to home Wink

    The night trains are notorious for running somewhat earlier than timetabled though of course will be perfectly to time or even late on the nights you're not out there waiting!

    I lived along the road which ran along the line In Ormond & I always loved seeing to the train go through Ormond station.

    Today's Long Island steelie thru Armadale at 11.37am.

    Bl24+ BL29 plus 27 wagons.

    The last 3-4 were empty with two of them apparently with square wheels.

    I know this isn't about Long Island steel but didn't know where to stick it..A couple of week ends ago i had the pleasure of taking the Stony Point train as far as Hastings. But i don't for the life of me remember pulling into Bitten Station..Is that station now dropped since Peninsula link?

    Long Island Steel thru Armadale just after Noon.

    BL29 / BL34 with 34 wagons.

    About 6 of those wagons dispersed thru the train had major flats that could be easily heard from over 50 metres away.

    Not much seems to have changed since my post of 20 August.

    I know the steel mill has been at Hastings for a long time (and hopefully it will survive the current problems that are causing it to make a loss).

    But in the olden days was The Steelie ever hauled by L class or E class electric locomotives once it got to the wires at Frankston, or has it always been diesel hauled the whole way?

    I would hate to say but the future of the mill looks bleak (so much Imported steel from Thailand and Taiwan coming Into Melbourne)

    The mill set up would probably be the starting base for the new deep water port proposed there (but I don't think the current Governments grand plans for the Port of Hastings will come to function, the "West Port" just ticks more boxes In terms of good transport connections)

    Brown coal from Latrobe Valley being exported Is just someone's pipe dream, massive overheads would have to be paid for before any exporting could commence (that's If there Is even a market for low value coal)

    The mill siding went In In 1969, many trains worked through to the mill from Albury and Adelaide, so 44 km's of electric traction would hardly be worth the effort. (never seen pictures of L Classes hauling heavy goods on the Frankston line, the L Class didn't perform very well on heavy goods because of their light axel load)

    After looking back through dad's photos from the 70s and 80s I've not seen electric locos on it.
