    1604 left Port Lincoln on a road transporter today, presumably to EDI Port Augusta for repairs. It had only been back in service for six weeks, after a year out of action while its engine block was repaired.

    Here it is at Port Lincoln last week:

    The original loco shed at Port Lincoln is being demolished today. The shed was erected in 1907, and like the carriage shed which succumbed to high winds a couple of years ago, it had originally been in use at Kingston SE. So it was somewhere around 130 years old, but had become unstable and dangerous. GWA considered rebuilding it, but as it is surplus to needs the safest option was to demolish it.

    850's heavy overhaul is progressing well. A temporary "paint shop" (a large marquee over a steel frame) has been erected behind the workshops building, and 850 is now in there for repainting into GWA colours. It is expected back in traffic within a month.

    902 arrived from Whyalla today:


    After a bit of attention at EDI Port Lincoln (including getting back its traction bogies) it is expected to go to Thevenard to supplement the loco pool there. Currently 848, 1601, 1603 and 1606 are there.

    904 will be coming down from Whyalla at some stage too. It seems that 873 will be set aside, replaced by 904, rather than having a major overhaul as planned.

    850 hasn't broken cover yet. Should not be long.

    850 has emerged from the paint tent at Port Lincoln, resplendent in fresh GWA paint. The orange shade used is slightly lighter to that used on previous repaints - apparently this is the "official GWA" colour, the old ones were "ASR colour". 850 is hooked up for load bank testing, and is expected to go for a test run on Monday. The bogies will be repainted before it goes back into traffic. (Photos taken with permission.)




    In other news, it seems now that 847 will be coming to Port Lincoln from Whyalla instead of 904.

    847 is the latest escapee from Whyalla to migrate south to Port Lincoln, arriving here yesterday. It was pulled from the road transporter by its former Whyalla mate 902.

    Despite all the extra locos, Port Lincoln is struggling to come up with operational power at the moment. 848 and 1601 came back from Thevenard recently for attention, with just 906, 1603 and 1606 left to cover the gypsum runs. It's unusual to see a 900 at Thevenard - it was the only loco available when 848/1601 came back. 850 is "out and about" on grain trains some of the time, but the winter timetable makes it difficult to catch in daylight on the lower Eyre Peninsula.

    A slight possibility I may be over there in a couple of weeks time, just for the weekend.

    It all depends on where  they are  going, available locos and crew ext. I live the EP as well and sometimes trains will go out  while other times they won't. Down time on weekends may allow for track work that may need to be done. Peter will also be able to enlighten on this.

    On a side note, 906 led 1603 and 1606 on the Gypo at 9:00 this mourning.

    I will be over on the Eyre Peninsula Monday and Tuesday next week, does anyone know what movements will going on those days, plus what times does the Gypo run in and out of Ceduna?

    Hi Tom,

    At the moment there are two grain trains out of Port Lincoln Mon-Fri, and occasionally one or two at weekends. One leaves roughly 8pm, usually for Wudinna or Kimba, reaching there around 6am. After loading, it returns and reaches Port Lincoln late afternoon/early evening. The second train leaves Port Lincoln towards midnight and runs to a closer destination, usually Lock or Rudall, and gets back to Port Lincoln mid-afternoon. All times highly variable, of course, as are destinations. Power for both trains is currently one 1200 and two 830s/900s.

    The gypsum train does three round trips per day, very roughly 4am, 11am and 6pm ex Thevenard. Runs to Kevin, loads and returns within 4-5 hours. Again very approximate. Currently 846, 902, 1601 and either 1603 or 1606 are at Thevenard for the gypo.

    Grain used to be shipped out of Thevenard, is this still happening? It has been said that Thevenard is too shallow for the larger vessels now favoured.  

    Rail used to bring the grain up (down in rail parlance) to Thevenard, how does this grain, if any get to Thevenard or is it trucked to Wudinna or other?

    There seem to be more grain carried now than in the days of steam.

    Another question, any idea when the next movement will be between Wudinna and Theverard? I know only loco transfer are done on this section now.

    Hi Ian,

    Some grain still goes out of the port at Thevenard, but it gets there by road. Most grain from the Minnipa-Nunjikompita area comes down to Wudinna by road. I don't know what the determining factors are as to whether grain is roaded to Thevenard or Wudinna, but it would probably be commercial - differing rates vs mileage.

    Grain hasn't gone by rail to/from Thevenard for about 10 years.

    Hi Tom,

    You've just missed one - 906 and one of the 1600s are on their way back to Port Lincoln right now, due here today. No transfers are planned for next week, although anything can happen if significant loco failures occur.

    If you are coming through Whyalla you should try to get a pic of 904 coupled up to a GWN (probably won't ever happen again), 2 of the CK's are down at the moment so it has been pulled out of 'retirement' got to say the drivers I spoke too weren't all that pleased to see it back and don't often have it online unless they are required to. It should be in the yard somewhere as there is a 12 hour shut down on Monday.
