Some of you who are into DCC sound may be aware of the work of Laurie McLean (an Australian) and his work with cell/tablet speakers, as supplied to him by George from TVW Miniatures in the USA.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bJVcu-Sf9s

Laurie has said (on the Yahoo Groups site) that he is not interested in being an Australian "agent" for George's speakers and enclosures.

I am interested in doing some installations in my own locos using these speakers and have sent an email to George to try and start the ball rolling for an order.

It seems silly that each of us in Australia who wants some of George's products, has to order directly from him.

Accordingly, I am looking into the possibility of becoming a "distributor" of George's products; assuming he is agreeable of course. I would not be trying to profiteer from any such arrangement, but I would be seeking to cover my costs of postage, packaging etc.

So, I would be interested to see if anybody on this site is likely to be a candidate for some of these speakers? What I was thinking is that I would initially purchase enough speakers just for my own needs for the foreseeable future (say 10 small rectangular speakers). That way, if nobody around Australia is interested, then I will have a small back-up supply for my own needs into the future (eg: for the 6 Trainorama 48s I have on order and the eventual arrival of the Auscision 45 class). I have an immediate need for a new repalcement speaker for a Powerline 48 (the recent run), but it seemed stupid to just order 1 speaker.

Interested in the thoughts of others.....

Hi Roachie

This is my first post so hopefully I do it correctly.

I would be interested in a number of these speakers at least 20, probably more

Thanks Paul,

Another forum member has sent me a PM, pointing out that George's speakers are around $8- (give or take) and that he had just bought a pack of 10 Nokia speakers off ebay for $15.00. These are designed as replacements for a cell phone, so obviously they don't come with enclosures.

My feeling is that the enclosure is just as important for sound quality as the speaker itself and as such, I will still be going ahead with an order.

Bear in mind that these small speakers come in various sizes and shapes. For the sake of simplicity, I plan to stick to one size/shape of speaker; that being the rectangular style with exact dimensions yet to be determined. I expect they will be the size that is shown in Laurie's video in the long hood of the loco. That way, it may be possible to use 2 speakers if there is sufficient room.

I have also posted this original message on the Yahoo Groups site:

http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Aus_Model_Rail/conversations/topics/42943

and have had some interest from modellers there too.

Hi Roachie,
I have also taken delivery of 8 of these small rectangular cell phone speakers from George at TVW, after learning of them from one of Laurie's YouTube clips.  Only had them in test with a decoder hook up (a Tsunami for a Climax, and a Loksound for the Na).  They sound great for their size, and I feel compare well to the larger space hungry high bass speakers.  George's laser cut enclosures are also really nice.  These are super compact speakers, and I am actually able to get them mounted on an On30 Climax between the frame members (tucked between frame and truck, since they are only about 7mm deep).  Certainly takes a good number of headaches out of hiding speakers when they are this size.  The price is great for what you get, but the US postage fee sort of encourages you to buy more than you'd likely want just to get your monies worth out of the postage.  I am right for supplies right now, but can only recommend these speakers for others to try out.  A local source would be a handy option.

Cheers,

I'm definitely up for it. I want to try fitting out some of these into my steamers Smile

Dan, how do they go with the Loksound? Been concerned they might be a little too quiet compared to the standard loksound speakers is all.

Thats all nice, but what are the speaker specs for impedance matching?

Most of the speakers TVW have are 8 ohm.

The speakers sounded fine to me.  These speakers are a bit variable with what they are mounted on and in.  The have a lot of resonance, so the surface they are mounted against will also help act as a bit of a speaker (ie mounted to a loco shell, the shell will vibrate and throw some extra sound).  Depending on the location, such as in a body, in a boiler or bunker, or under a cab roof, the amount of resonance will vary.  Simple trial and error for improving results.

These speakers look similar to the "sugar cube" speakers that came with my Zimo sound decoders that I use in my H0 steam locomotives. The sound is OK and they are easy to install.

Anyone interested in more samples of these speakers should browse through Laurie's YouTube clips - search for scoopmmr.  Short clip here of his earlier testing with these cell speakers.

This second video was a better comparison between the cell speakers and the bigger high bass speakers.  I almost reckon its a clearer sound on the top end than the high bass speaker.

I have now received the package from George of TVW Miniatures, containing the speakers I ordered.

There are 2 members on this site who asked me to order speakers on their behalf.

I have sent PMs to both of these blokes....one is a chap named Paul who has the user "handle" of : 3333. Paul has not read or acknowledged any of my follow-up PMs since asking me to order 20 speakers for him.....so Paul, if you read this message, please check your Private Messages and let me know that you do still intend to purchase these speakers from me. Twenty "spare" speakers is just too many for me to hold on to, so if you are no longer interested then I will advertise them for sale to anybody else who might be interested.
