DERMPAV have posted a tour to Maldon on Sunday October 27. The tour will be visiting Muckleford and Maldon for the Mucklefest festivities. Plenty of time to check everything out or go through to Maldon and have a look around town. The second through passenger train to run from Melb to Maldon since 1976. The DERM also ran the first one back in May. Good to see the main line and a tourist railway working together. Details can be found at http://www.dermpav.net.au

I am curious also. What was the second through train with passengers to run from Melb right through to Maldon?

Correct, Just no one knew at the time I posted until SRV launched the trip late last week.

This trip highlights the problem with running mainline railmotor tours.

The Steamrail tour which will include four steam engines to Maldon is $99 per adult to Maldon return.

Where the railmotor tour the day after is $114 per adult to Maldon and return.

For me it is not feasible to spend that much for a railmotor trip, when I could pay less for a run behind steam...

You get a different type of people when it is a railmotor... well worth the extra $15.00

I don't see the problem here other than being on the same weekend.

Railmotor trips have less people and I find tend to be much more relaxed events than a few hundred railfans on a steam tour.

On the other hand of course 4 steam locos is a great day out as well, but there are more crowds and as such the day tends to be more controlled

I went on the first DERMPAV trip to Maldon and I think it was well worth the cost. Considering that they usually get enough to fill it up, it shows I'm not the only one.

Do many younger folk ride these tours or is it the older market?

It seems to depend on the trip, but I would say the majority are in the 40 to 50+ bracket. However, there is usually a handful of younger people on them, especially the day trips which aren't as expensive.

You could also argue that a full tank of petrol is cheaper than either tour, and you'd get a lot more photos if you're that way inclined. But that's not the point of this, is it.

There is a market for both of the tours, and it depends on who you're appealing to. Some people might like the quieter atmosphere of the DERM, whereas others might prefer the steam special, and all the people that go with it. Horses for courses. Those that want to ride on a tour, will ride on whichever one appeals to them. The way I see it, there's a market for both.

It was $1.43 per litre on the weekend in Melbourne, and it's currently $1.51 up here. I never let the tank get empty, so on average the most I pay is around $65 to fill the tank up depending on the level it's at when I get to the bowser.

Still seats available on the DERM to Mucklefest for anyone wanting a seat. A stop at a suburban station on the way out could be arranged for anyone wanting to hop on but can't make it into Southern Cross or hop on at Newport. Will be a great day at Mucklefest with lots of things to see and do.

Yes... I went to the DERMPAV site 'hoping' to still be able to get two seats. Needn't have worried. Was it sufficiently advertised?
