Orient Express M vans

    Location: no where near gunzels
    There was some very good news at The Modelling The Railways of SA Convention, OE are going to release the iconic SAR M vans, all the colours are covered ie, dark grey, light grey (SAR and ANR), ANR red and AN green/yellow. I need more M vans, and RTR is a bonus.
    Expected delivery, June 2014. How many others knew of this definite release?, the rumours have been around for a while and it was a pretty sure bet that the OE would do them, but that was the first official word I had heard. I am impressed with a September announcement and June delivery.
    Congratulations on the OE team, your efforts are very appreciated by the SAR modelling fraternity.

    I missed the convention... Again...

    Did BGB announce anything - or make an appearance even? I am pleased at the OE M van release, I wonder if we can talk them into doing the billboard vans rtr? Next on the list, reefers...

    I knew a bit about this project but was not told when though, but this is good news for those that want and need a M van without resorting to those now obsolete BGB models.

    Somehow I do not think Mr BGB will surface at an exhibition ever, not if he knows what is good for him anyway. There are a lot that want blood from him and if he showed up I reckon they might just try it as well.

    Business gone Bad I like that one and aptly describes it too. Laughing

    Only three door types? Which of the four is going to miss out?

    I figure that I can get by with just the original vented door, but most of the billboard vans had the original solid doors. The steel vented door, and the later solid doors did not appear until well into the 1970s.

    I can't believe it's taken this long for someone to make an RTR version of one of the most common SAR pieces of rolling stock!

    I thought the release of this M van was "known" for weeks?
    I've heard people talking about it for a while now?
    It would be good if other typical SAR 'Webb' era vehicles were produced.....Shocked

    I've asked about the riveted O wagons, but OE tells me that these have already been announced by an interstater, a few years ago...

    The D van is little more than a variant of the M van.

    Which leaves only the FB, of the Webb wagons.


    The real missing wagon is the little Y wagon.

    There is a whole range of wagons built on the SAR "standard" 36' underframe, some (even) in the 1970s...

    A ready to run Y wagon would open up possibilities for other older steel four wheelers as well if the did the same kind of thing as the OBf and DWf wagons  and have a separate underframe so it can be used on various models. You could then do besides the Y trucks the DA vans, G trucks, X trucks and even Yy trucks as well. These would be great to have on a layout.

    I spoke with Fred just after the introduction of the OBf and he advised at the time "no" as it was "to old' and removed from service "to early" make of that what you will.

    Or get all your friends to ask him for them Smile

    Looks like we will have to inundate him with requests for them, as some variants of Y class wagons lasted well into the late SAR era and possibly even in to the early ANR era as well.

    One other thing I would to twist his arm on though is getting some or all the known versions of the specially painted M vans done as Ltd Edition runs if possible. Some of these painted M vans lasted well into the diesel era of the SAR.

    Yes Allan, the Eureka "O" wagons, nearly 3 years ago now and still waiting, I still wish I had cancelled my Eureka order and bought more OER "Ob's" but I have waited this long what's a few more months. The big selling point on the Eureka Models (for me) was that they would have interior detail so they could run empty and tarp all the Ob's and Og's, still pee'd of about the wait though.
    But I think Orient Express deserves a very big pat on the back for bringing these products to us, as I stated earlier, I had heard rumours  about the M's and then to see them announced in September and they should be available in June makes Eureka look pretty silly with their 3 year wait, I don't know how Fred does it but keep it up, we all do appreciate it.

    I'm much in the same boat - I'm still holding out for the Eureka ones for the interior detail as opposed to the BGB, David Zeitz and now OE ones I have running around.

    Last I spoke to Ron, I'll be getting the R and the tank wagons but still not the Os.


    So guess this leaves the FBs for OE next Smile

    I think you might be right  about the MG Aaron, the MB was the single oddity that was built as a 'all door louvre van', later classified MBP then MBR, it is nothing like a M van.

    Just found reference to the MG coded wagons as those floor strengthened vans for keg traffic. I fous it in of all places some prototype notes included with what I presume were BGB M van kit instructions. I am not sure if that increases or decreases the validity of my thoughts...

    Sounds as good as a source as anything else available, I had a look thru the notes and couldn't find anything on M vans, only the MB mentioned. If the notes came from the Pete Ziegler era I think they would be spot on, if they came from a later era......well, although they never really got re written, just re printed.

    I thought VB was for Very Bad.
