Ballasting crew was at Merrigum Friday. Another couple of weeks before they get to Echuca based on their current work rate.
- Although there was a crew on a high rail in Tatura. Not sure what they were up to, but if weekend work is happening, there must be a date the rice mill needs rail access.

This thread has now been going for nearly three years and 250 odd posts. Has a train actually run and, if not, (as seems likely) when will services commence, please?I can only report what I see. A high rail dump truck is spreading the ballast, and a tamper is following it. I dont believe anything but maintenance vehicles have run on the line for the last 3 years.
I thought that some trains ran a year or so ago, not that I saw them.A few PN Tocumwal freight runs were routed through Toolamba - Echuca - Bendigo - Melbourne in early 2011.

Wouldn't the work currently being done be because of the fact the Bendigo line will be shut down for an extended period of time over Xmas? That would mean trains would run on the line when the shut down occurs. Correct me if I'm wrong but unless there's a requirement for additional paths, the current situation will remain status quo.
Thanks. In that case it will be useful to have a second route to the north in any case. Supporting our exporters is the right thing to do.

The plan is definitely to permanently reroute the rice train via Toolamba to enable Sunrice and Qube to get 9"6" containers onto the service. These can't go via Bendigo. Sunrice haven't cofounded the upgrade for occasional use.
So who are we to believe regarding the long term future route of the rice train? On one handwe are going to have to wait and see. i've seen comments by QUBE drivers that the Toolamba route will be the permanent one, with the tall box line being one of the main reasons. Another is slots on the bendigo line have the train running in quite late to melbourne, the other way may allow for trains to get to melbourne much earlier with double track all the way from Seymour.
we have someone who works for qube who says it will still run via bendigo with toolamba line being used when bendigo line is unavailable. On the other hand we have people who's credentials/sources are? saying that toolamba is the long term future route.
