To my knowledge the Pinkenba line has never been double track.  The platform at Hendra on the left side of the train (heading towards Ascot) was in use until the mid-70s, when replaced with the currrent one on the other side of the train.

The platform on north side of Hendra station, dual track width formation and cuttings, and the island platform at Clayfield were all constructed in the 1950s but the second track wss never laid.

The level crossing at Sandgate Road and Clayfield station were replaced by the underpass and present station in this era.

From memory the platform on the northside of the line was very basic, and low.  It didn't last very long, as the current platform opened in the 70s.

Thanks for the replies.  I thought it was probably the case the track was never laid as I can't think of a reason it would be lifted.  Would be nice to see the line extended to Hamilton Wharf using the old line to the BP fuel farm and dual tracked to Hendra.  But there again the 300/305 buses are frequent and get to the city just as quick.

Wrote to the government a couple of years ago suggesting the same thing - extending the current terminus at Doomben to the Hamilton Wharf area using the existing unused (and overgrown!) rail corridor.  

The extent of development in the wharf area in the coming years would probably justify the rail extension.  However, the upgrade of Kingsford Smith Drive will likely result in the removal of the level crossing, the remaining track on the south side of Kingsford Smith and any chance of the line's extension.

Still you could not expect a future rail extention to be at grade with local roads and public speces surrounding new development.

The earlier drafts of the Northshore Hamilton plan showed a possible rail connection between Doomben and the proposed commercial centre near MacArthur Ave / Barcham St.  This has been dropped from the current plans, but remains a future possibility.

The upgrade of Kingsford Smith Drive and likely removal of the existing track is not relevant to the future passenger line, as there is NO WAY a new passenger service would cross a choked-to-the-gills 4/6 lane artery like KSD at grade. The line may follow the existing corridor from Doomben to KSD, but it will either go over or under the road - I suspect under. All this is 30 years away minimum.

River I think is far from a problem and they have dug through a lot worse. A few options,
- you dig a trench like Sydney harbour tunnel, lower the tunnel sections in place and pump the water out.
- Go deep enough to stay in hardened rock
- Or like some tunnels you dig and seal as you go with a even more fancy TBM.

As for flooding, you have the entrances either above the flood level or sealable.
