I don't think there is, there is no need for it now, and I seem to remember it might have been pulled up from Leigh Creek to Maree. But don't quote me on that though, someone else will know for certain.

There is no Track beyond Leigh Creek. But you will see where the tracks did lay and the old concrete bridges built for the line to run to Maree and Alice Springs- in days gone by.If you are into the history of the old Track its worth having a look at where it used to be.The original line used to run from Quorn. And some of the old Bridges and culverts are still in place.

Hi Brian,

Your inquiry-question made me go back to my book 'Pichi Richi Railway of South Australia' written by Pete Dobre in 2007. It writes that in 1957,the Port Auggusta Line extended to Maree.Maree became the largest railway town between Adelaide and Alice Springs.

On January 18,1878, the first sod of the Port Augusta and Government Gums Railway was turned ,Initially called the Portm Augusta-Quorn Railway, this section of the Great Northern Railway opened in December 1879.

They planned to link Port Augusta with Darwin.Within 2.1/2 years, the line reached Government Gums[now Farina].On May17, 1882, the Port Augusta and Government Gums Railway was officially opened ,South Australia Operated the line.

The line extended to Hergott Springs [now Maree],in 1884.By 1891,the line reached Oodnadatta.During 1927-29,the Commonwealth Railways bridged the gap to Alice Springs.

I hope that this helps in your enquiry.

Torana.

Hi Brian,

I meant to add that today there are 2 seperate tracks that run from Port Augusta.
The Standard Gauge runs from Port Augusta to Leigh Creek, and is a Heavy Haul Coal Railway. The trains travel at 80 klms per hour when empty and 70klms per hour when loaded. And is hauled by 3 Locomotives and pulls 168 wagons. It is a sight to see.The train returns to Leigh Creek of an Afternoon and is loaded ready to depart at 7.p.m.  On arrival at Port Augusta Power Station it unloads and about late mid morning it returns to Leigh Creek, to re load.
The Pichi Richi Railway generally operates of a weekend and travels along a narrow gauge track, as far as Stirling North, where it diverts away into the Flinders Rangers and heads for Woolshed Flats and onto Quorn.
If you would like me to send you some photos of the trains, P.M. me,and i would be happy to send you some.I have also Photographed the old track along the way As far as the Bitumen goes-on the way to Maree.

Quick question torana - can you see in the Pete Dobré book what sources he acknowledged? He has always had an outstanding reputation for integrity with regards to acknowledging the sources of any text he's used to accompany his photographic works, so some might like to know the original sources which they could look up for more detail.

Pichi Richi Railway did a Bluebird charter to Marree back in the late 1980s, not sure of the exact date, maybe someone on here can help.

Train Tour Promotions were going to run a trip to Marree using Bluebirds, shortly after Pichi Richi's trip, but they were told NO!

During October and November the coal train will be operating during the day, after around mid November the train will revert to normal evening/night time running, so it is a good time to go and grab some photos of it.

Cheers
