Steam loco derail Kaniva

  Colonial boy Junior Train Controller

Location: Central Victorian goldfields

A relative told me that  they recalled a steam loco "falling over" at Kaniva and it was a big effort to restore every thing to normal.
Guessing this was late 50's to mid 60's (relative is 65 years old)
Can anyone help with info on the date or loco type
thanks Colonialboy

No idea about a steam loco "falling over" at Kaniva but in 1951 there were four A2s involved in the head on at Serviceton (Serviceton being just up the road from Kaniva), 3 of them cut up on the spot while the fourth one was fixed up, only to last only another 2 years before it also was cut up.

I actually think you are right. My Grandma lived on Yarrock street... Right alongside the line and has some really terrible black and white photos of I believe was a derailment or head on between two trains. I forget which.  I have the photos... It's hard to tell what really.

It was SERVICETON  in September 1951...not Kaniva.

Serviceton, 1951

On 7 September 1951, a westbound Overland interstate express train was involved in a head-on collision with an eastbound Overland at Serviceton. The fireman on the westbound express was killed. Three of the four A2 class locomotives involved were cut up on the spot; the fourth one (A2 946) was repaired.[23][24]
