    Recently I observed a cleanup work on the Brisbane - Sydney mainline north of Kyogle e.g. removal of the redundant telegraph poles. I also notice the as yet commissioned new three level speed boards.

    I was wondering what the EP stands for on the middle yellow board?

    And is that just a way of saying reducing train speed limits, without actually saying reduced train speed limits?

    Not necessarily. The notice for these new speed boards implies they're actually reducing the length of the lower limit by moving the low boards closer to the relevant curve. Don't read too much into it.

    So how does the driver know if his train is an "Enhanced Performance Freighter" or an "Unenhanced Performance freighter?" There must be a definition written somewhere.Shocked

    taken near Kempsey on the NSW North Coast. and for the record the old boards just out of view had 80/85 on them.

    Is there a formula that relates curve radius, speed , axle load and cant angle?

    Enhanced performance applies to certain types of rollingstock and the train has to be composed completely of these.


    Introduction of 110mm cant deficiency for curves between 235m radius and 501m radius for freighters on the interstate lines.


    110mm is the cant deficiency allowed when determining speeds for XPTs so it looks as if EP freighters will have same speeds around these curves as the XPTs.

    I dug up a little more info on these now-not-so-new speed boards...ARTC has published a Route Condition Notice with some more details about them for a little bed time reading.
