You'd think the H cars would last even less time than the N sets (negating the need for new bogies)?
Saying that, if they still had the higher re-geared A class and the Socoimi (spelling?) bogies, then it'd be worth it...

I was under the impression that the Socimi bogies were meant for the Z cars (or S, or N?), but were only tested under spare Harris cars (at least one photo is online showing 75' Harris trailer 894T with these bogies - the car was still blue with no other modifications). The difference between Z car bogies and Harris bogies are that Z cars don't bounce around the track like a HQ Holden with stuffed shocks.

Apologies for bumping this thread back up again, but as a New South Welshman, I'm not clued in to developments in The Garden State as much as I'd like to be... Has anything changed in the situation of these cars (obviously they're not back on the tracks yet, or I'd have heard about it). Recalling a recent visit, I encouraged a friend of mine to book a ticket on the Swan Hill service from Bendigo to Melbourne when we visited, but he was unable to, as the train was booked solid with coaches supplementing the train.

Three Z cars have returned to service so far, BZN252, BZN266 and BZN267.
Despite only three Z cars back in service, there's only four 3 car N sets are running around now, N11, N14 and N17 (+N18 in Newport undergoing repaint and refurbishment); all other sets are at least four cars long.

Matt, many thanks for the information mate, I've always found these cars to be interesting, and it's good to hear they're coming back. Can you advise if they've all been repainted as part of their return to service, or if at least some of them remain in red/white?

Cars BTN254, BCZ257 and BZN258 remain in red and blue; all are still at Newport.
BTN254 & BZN258 were part of VN18 (N18) when withdrawn, N18 being the last red N set. Wouldn't be surprised if they're painted before returning to service.
BCZ257 in its red livery is missing V/Line logos.

Trent,Thanks again Matt, would be interesting to see a "mixed" livery set again, I only saw one or two on my visits to Victoria, and I'm not sure if I got any shots of them! I only ask as I'm not a fan of the new livery on the passenger cars, I much prefer the older scheme!

One thing is for sure, there is plenty of money for paint jobs and sign changes, but when it comes to spending money on infrastructure.........

There can't be that much money for paint jobs, or we wouldn't still have "Regal" locos and carriages or a myriad of liveries on every route bus in Melbourne. It's taken ages for Yarra Trams to "repaint" (sticker) their trams into the new scheme too - they aren't supposed to be plain white any more. The only vehicles with any consistent livery are taxis.
