Bridge Challenge: Flatbed Railcar?

  mickus Beginner

Hi All,

Have been scouring the internet in an effort to locate and buy a disused flatbed railcar that I can MacGyver into a bridge for our brook. Although a common practice with our friends in the US ( http://www.paragonbridgeworks.com/index.html ) it seems surprisingly rare here.

This is for sale in Qld http://www.quicksales.com.au/ad/vehicle-bridge-ex-flatbed-rail-car/itemid-1000044208 and is fundamentally what I want to achieve.

Can anyone give me a pointer towards where I might be able to buy or salvage a flatbed rail car in Perth?

Cheers...

Hi Mickus,

There are lots of examples of this is the country areas of WA. Whilst I can't think of the top of my head one local, from memory I've seen a few around Toodyay.

Anyway, generally the main source of these (Aurizon) sell them direct to a scrap yard, so you'd have to go through them. I know that they are having another 'purge' of rolling stock soon so some may come available.

The hard bit is finding out who to speak too.

Maybe someone on here remembers who took the last lot of QUA wagons? Did anyone see where they ended up?

Try J&P Metals group at Picton WA phone 08 97255050. they did have a heap of QU/QUA/QUB flat top, might still have a few on hand

Take a trip through the Chittering Valley, almost every driveway bridge is an old flat wagon, as well as around Toodyay and Northam.

J and P in Picton already mention by WAGR, had about 30 decks and 60 bogies to suit. From memory they were asking $6K for the tops and $2K or $4K for the bogies each.

There's one at Isandra on the Hotham Valley Dwellingup line. Hotham Valley might be a good place to enquire for a chassis. They've been selling of quite a bit of surplus stock recently.
On Saturday morning a wagon chassis (QU25029) was placed by crane across the waterway immediately to the southern side of the Isandra Bridge. This chassis will be re-decked and provide access for bridge reconstruction as well as ongoing maintenance and emergency access as it joins what were two dead-ends of a fire break.
