Steamrail has put up a tour brochure called Maldon Steam Spectacular which will run on October 26th 2013. R761 and K190 from Melbourne to Castlemaine, J549 and K190 to Maldon with the R being stabled at Castlemaine. On the way they will cross J515 on a charter then it will be J549 and D3 639 from Maldon to Castlemaine then D3 and R back to Melbourne. Looks like a great day out first steam trip direct to Maldon since 1976!!!!

Hi Guys, a General Outline of how the day will go;
- K190 and R761 will depart out of Melbourne for Castlemaine.
- R761 will be left in Castlemaine Yard whilst K190 and J549 head for Maldon.
- R761 will be turned and serviced at Castlemaine during the day.
- K190 will swap with D3 639 at Maldon with the D3 and J549 double heading back to Castlemaine.
- D3 639 and R761 will then double head back to Melbourne.

Extra's:
- K190 & J549 will cross J515 on a special charter at Muckleford.
- There will be photostops between Castlemaine and Maldon on each leg, a mean amount of smoke will be put on for those that have tickets on the train at each photo location.

It's shaping up to be a brilliant day, 4 different Steam Locomotives on our train and the chance to see 5 Steam locos throughout the day. Doesn't get any better.

I think there's typo in there, Les. . . suspect that 639 and 549 will be heading to Castlemaine, so that the D can come home with 761.

Sounds very interesting, like the "good old days" in Victoria, but also a very long day. Living north of Melb as I do, it would mean a start of 0730 with a return home around midnight (just like the good old days too, but i was younger then!). Any possibility that you could sell tickets just for the branch line part of the tour? I would definitely book on that.

What a pearler of a shot this is, taken by our very own Barrington Womble. It's a photo you too can also have at selected photo stops between Castlemaine and Maldon for our special passengers on the day. Book now to avoid disappointment.

Looks like a cracker of a trip, so I'll be on board.  More foaming gunzels per carriage than has been seen for quite a while I can imagine....

With just under a week to go I'm looking forward to this event. Now that J549 is confirmed to be used on a portion of this trip it just sweetens what is already on offer.

Looking forward to see the train run though Gisborne. Hope to then catch up with it again at Maldon.

The train is due to sit at Gisborne from 10.09am until 10.33am if that helps. Should be on the West track at the platform.

Loco
Thanks Loco for the timing info!
I hope everybody enjoys themselves tomorrow whether they are fortunate enough to be on board or watching it at various locations.

For those photographing it trackside, please remain safe and remember that this is an active and busy rail corridor.
After the two "R"`s went to Bendigo recently, I spoke to a driver who was operating Velocity services on the line that day. He said that it was very disconcerting to come around a corner at speed and see railfans across tracks. (not to mention frightening)
One photographer even tripped across the tracks when trying to flee the speeding Velocity.
I don`t want to appear an old grump, but remember your legal responsibilities. It may save you!

Great day. Hope everyone enjoyed it. Looking forward to seeing the photos.

This clip from Sawmill Road crossing and across the creek. The train stopped, passengers alighted and after reversing the train then run through for a photo opportunity.

Was a great day yesterday.  5 steam locomotives, a packed train, lots of complicated shunting around the yards, mostly good weather (although cold at times), many colorful characters around (THAT almost requires a new thread...), and old school photostops (plus rebels).

A couple of shots from the digital camera (film shots hopefully developed and scanned later this week):

Arrival into Castlemaine with J515 waiting patiently:
