Melbourne cup Southern Auroa

    Location: Geelong
    I see that the NSW RTM are running a train to the Melbourne Cup from Sydney
    It has a stop over in Geelong on Monday 4th November.
    I presume they will use North Shore for passengers  off/on
    Does anyone know hot to obtain a timeline of the Geelong stop and where it will be stabled while here ?

      QSB6.7 Chief Train Controller

    Location: Going off the rails on a crazy train.
    If it is stopping in Geelong, it can only be at North Shore.
    If it is a long consist it will have to stop several times (think Overland) as the platform is very short.

    Train arrive GH loop 0935  dep 1743  pick up passes North shore 1815

    Thanks for the link to the timetable, handy to see there's 2 lots (Up and Down, Syd/Melb bound etc) of seeing it through Maccy loop.

    Interesting to see that on the Monday night they travel all the way from North Shore to Benalla to stable for the night, then back to Melbourne for the cup on Tuesday. Any specific reason for this or have I misread that document?

    I must be missing something as well, but where do the passengers get off the train to go to the cup on Tuesday.
    There is no mention in the timetable of the train ever going to Spencer St station.

    Seems like a bizzare place to have to get on and off the train.

    How do the Passengers get from Southern Cross to Flemington normally? I'm guessing could be the same way just from a different location.

    The HE brochure suggests that coaches will meet the train at Broadmeadows....for the money the passengers are paying, I don't think they will be accorded the novelty of a suburban train trip.

    Its maybe a bit difficult to get a path into SCS for a lengthy train at the times required too.

    Logistically it's a lot easier for passengers to detrain at Broadmeadows, be picked up by chartered coaches and delivered direct to the racecourse at Flemington. The empty cars can then proceed to stable at South Dynon without any undue hassles.

    The Southern Aurora ceased travelling to Spencer Street Station in August 1986.

    How handy it would've been if Sunshine platform still existed. (When was the last time something stopped there on the gauge?)

    Yes, would've been a slightly shorter bus ride there. Would be a while, even as early as I can remember the Sunshine SG platform was barricaded off and looking decrepit and run down. (So earlier than mid-80's?)

    I usually head to McIntyre Loop, get a few crosses there normally (unless it's express through there and crosses at Totty Loop instead!) and I used to go to Southern Cross, but that's out as it no longer goes that far.

    Broady would be good as the train stops there to detrain passengers, further north might be good to get it at a reasonable speed, say Somerton etc?

    It's now Southern Cross Station (SCS)...it's been so for about 8 years.

    The Overland still rolls into Platform 2 twice a week as it always had in the past.
    It may well be that due to SCS being so busy these days there isn't the space available for a 15 car train (Southern Aurora) to take up space on Platform 2 for the time required.

    Not to mention the probable added expense of the private operator (Heritage Express) having to pay an access charge to SCS management to use the station.

    FYI The Overland only stops once at North Shore. The conductor walks through the train and collects North Shore passengers approaching the stop and escorts them out the door aligned with the platform.

    Interesting, as I have been caught several times at the Station Street crossing while The Overland made multiple stops, unless this is a recent change?

    The other problem is that you can only run around one loco at a time at the bottom end of PL2, hence the reason it's run in push/pull mode from McIntyre Loop on previous occasions.
