I can now confirm the timber sleepers at Burnley are for decking for the Burnley flyover. I can also confirm that all the new rail for the line is 60kg.
Duncs
Piles of timber sleeper have also been laid out across the Freeway/Yarra River Bridge near Heyington, Glen Waverley line. Expect them and many remaining concrete sleepers still laying about to be inserted during post-2100hrs occupations scheduled for the next 2 weeks

Looks like more trackwork is planned between Burnley and Richmond stations, and possibly also between Burnley and Glenferrie...

Three road-rail excavators with what I believe are called "platypus" attachments for inserting new sleepers, and an ordinary excavator (used to spread ballast), were parked this morning in the small storage yard off Lynch Street Hawthorn, near the intersection with Power Street.

Piles of concrete sleepers, barrels of pandrol clips, some platypus attachments and sundry other equipment is stored on the waste ground adjacent to the Hawthorn rail bridge over the Yarra.  There is also a store of concrete sleepers in the works siding on the up side of Burnley station.

New lengths of rail have been placed in the cess at East Richmond station, and at least two of the four tracks between East Richmond and Richmond are marked with white dashes of paint indicating where new sleepers will be inserted.

Announcement at Richmond station tonight that there will be track works each night next week after 8.30pm, with bustitution between Richmond and Burnley.  From the markings on the track, and the stacks of sleepers and new rail, it looks like at least two of the four tracks will be resleepered and rerailed, and possibly all four tracks at East Richmond station.

I saw them too. This track upgrade is getting pretty serious. At this rate they will have done most of the line by the end of this year.

Yep. I'm just hoping they come back and do the express line and the down local line between Burnley and my station (Glenferrie). The amount of rubbish left around after the up local line was resleepered and rerailed indicates to me they are probably coming back to do more work (and do one big clean up at the end of it). Contrast the amount of mess left on my line with the thorough clean up after the recent resleepering and rerailing on the Glen Waverley line.

Hopefully they rid of those horrible train set curves between East Richmond and Richmond while they're at it. The pit at East Richmond itself didn't need upgrading.

Looks like the curves will be fully resleepered.  Spot sleeper replacement was undertaken overnight on the down local line curve, but from the paint marks on the track it looks like all sleepers on the curve will eventually be replaced (this is the way the up local line around Glenferrie was resleepered - spot replacement initially, then the track gang comes back on subsequent nights and replaces all the 'in-between' sleepers).

However, I don't think there is sufficient room to ease the radius of the curves, so I suspect we'll be stuck with a 40kph speed limit.

About half a dozen road-rail excavators with platypus attachments were parked on the up side of Burnley station this morning, and various pieces of smaller hand operated equipment were lying next to the down local line between East Richmond and Richmond.

Works began last night and are expected to continue until 17 October.

Works appear to have finished - or at least paused for the time being.  The four curves between East Richmond and Richmond have been fully resleepered and at least some of the track appears to have been replaced. No renewal of the pit at East Richmond, however, despite the two local lines through the platforms being overgrown with weeds (can't imagine there's much drainage occurring and surprised mudholes haven't developed).  On the four tracks between East Richmond and Burnley about one in every five sleepers has been replaced with concrete. Doesn't look like much new ballast has been laid, and the formation is pretty churned up from the insertion of the new sleepers - no sign of a tamper or ballast regulator having gone over the lines yet. Most of the track machinery has disappeared, but the poor state of the ballast makes me think the track gang must be planning to return.

I should have added - it looks like the track gangs will be employed elsewhere for the next couple of weeks. Track works are scheduled for weekday and Saturday evenings, and all day on Sundays, 19-31 October, between Blackburn and Ringwood, and beyond Ringwood on both the Lilydale and Belgrave branches.

The Alamein line will also be closed all day on 26-27 October for upgrading of the Riversdale Rd level crossing.

Don't forget ongoing works near Mitcham. I can confirm that the rail through Burnley Station dates back to 1949.

Most of the older 107LB rails have 1949 in brackets before the actual date.

Yes, I made that mistake while checking the rail's age on the Main North in NSW... it was actually dated 1956.

It seems like someone at Metro is reading these posts ShockedShockedShocked...

After my disparaging comments in this thread about Glenferrie station, last night a crew from Metro gave the station a high-pressure wash.  Still not sure you could describe the station as "premium" according to any accepted definition of the word, but at least it's not as dirty as it was... Very HappyVery HappyVery Happy

Meanwhile, limited track works appear to be continuing.  Two nights ago I could hear detanators going off from my house - sounded like they were between Glenferrie and Auburn, or perhaps Auburn and Camberwell (wasn't prepared to go out in my pyjamas to look Embarassed ).  Not sure what works took place - if anyone else knows please don't hesitate to post a reply.

Last night there was a hi-rail ute and 3-4 workers with head-torches on the up side of Hawthorn station.  Couldn't see what they were doing unfortunately.  Some platypus vehicles and excavators parked in the storage yard off Lynch St Hawthorn for the last couple of nights.

I think it might have something to do with the centre line...last time I checked the other two appeared to be complete.

Not really near Glenferrie but on the same line, and as Lilydale has already been mentioned in this thread I will put this in here.

This machine was parked today in no. 4 road at Lilydale.  I assume it is a rail grinder (or similar) which is capable of moving from A to B via either rail or road, but can anyone confirm this?
