Of course the one question which was conveniently not asked was why he crossed when the booms were down, the lights flashing, the bells ringing, and riding on the footpath.

Geez Louise - is he ever lucky to be alive.  I used to live nearby and I know the area well - what can you do when people don't even look?  He rode straight into the path of the train for God's sake; even if there was a hydraulic gate it still doesn't stop people from going through the emergency exit to cross -

Despite his injuries I really hope they threw the book at him.

Absolutely no sympathy at all.
He crossed when the boom gates were down, and bell ringing. His responsibility entirely.

I like how the media take his side of the story and blame the crossing.   Rolling Eyes

And he is now campaigning for the 'dangerous' crossing to be upgraded. Has he thought the perhaps he should trade-in his ineffective brain and get a new upgraded one instead? What a complete twit.

Sign reads "Stop on red signal".

No mention of "Stop on bell".

Therefore, faulty sign at fault.

PS. Item listed this week on well-regarded "Economist" newspaper on front cover: "Too many lawyers in Washington DC."

I can't believe he is campaigning for the crossing to be upgraded. There shouldn't even be a need for pedestrian gates, how stupid to do you have to be to cross the tracks without looking?

What an absolute fool.

To those people calling for upgrades, call all you like. We will never be able to protect the idiot from himself.

If they upgrade the crossing I hope they don't fill in the pedestrian underpass.

Does this pedestrian underpass have enough headroom to ride a bike through?

I think all pedestrian crossings should be a simple underpass where possible. Then again, I think there should also be more than one entrance/exit at every station on the network, but we all know how that works down Mexico way (I'm surprised they don't close the Etihad end of Southern Cross like they do at Richmond).

The problem with underpasses is that they are a good place for murders, thugs, rapists, Christian evangelists and nere-do-wells to hide in. For that reason many people will not use an underpass.

That made me laugh - and it has a ring of truth.

I used to catch a train in Adelaide many years ago at a station where (for some reason) you'd always get ambushed by Jehovah's Witnesses.  There's only so many times you can be polite about it; after a while you end up either telling them to naff off or completely ignore them.  I really feel sorry for those people, having to go out and try and convert people 20 hours a month or whatever it is - their God is very cruel to them.

Rubbish. He has a good excuse. The "Stop on red signal" sign should have been written in Textese, thus:

"Stpnrdsgnl". 8)

We teach kids to look both ways, especially as they have limited peripheral vision.
Until they get older and demonstrate they can cross the roads safely we walk them to school.
And when there are kids around we should always cross roads & railways safely so that they learn by the example we set.

Then again there are some adults that should not be the ones to teach kids the safe way to cross.

Most people just don't take safety seriously enough at all..they don't seem to understand the laws of physics. Of course there isn't even a mention of the Train Driver and what would have been going through his or her mind. Also a reminder why I only watch ABC or SBS for news or current affairs.

Colourblind people can see luminescence. Additionally, most colourblind people can generally see quite a fair bit of spectrum that 'ordinary' people can.

My brother is colour blind and has problems with green and red. His computer keyboard has custom coloured keys to assist with typing. He will never get a drivers licence.

You are allowed a drivers licence if you are colour blind - I know people in my family that are colour blind and do drive - it is for this reason that we have Red on Top, followed by Amber in the middle and Green in the bottom - so colour blind people can tell by the position!

Also, being colour blind doesn't preclude you from listening to alarm bells, flashing lights, and the train whistle. The majority of accidents and fatalities on the railway are caused by pedestrians or cars failing to obey basic warning signs or gates, and usually because they don't want to miss the train, didn't think about keeping the train tracks clear and got stuck because of traffic, or something stupid like that.

If there were a serious disability that causes an issue, then yes, I could understand. But impatience is not a disability.
