Arrium SG derailment

    Happened around midnight Sunday night, door on a wagon mid consist came open on the way into the tip pocket, all wagons bar the last one in front of the trailing locos made it through the product. The bogies eventually dislodged from the frame and ended up under GWA002 causing extensive damage to the front of the loco, approx 1200m of track has been damaged.

    I take it that this occurred at Whyalla and that the damaged track is within the balloon loop.

    The Arrium train carries hematite (iron) ore originally from Arrium's Peculiar Knob mine, loading onto the trains at the new balloon loop at Wirrida. The end point is unloading (through doors on the bottom of the hopper wagons) into a complicated trans-shipment operation at Whyalla.

    Prominent Hill is
    • Operated by Oz Minerals, not Arrium.
    • Copper (transported by train) and gold, not iron.
    • Loaded at the Wirrida siding (a couple of kilometres south of the junction to the new balloon loop) for transport to Port Adelaide, not Whyalla.
    • Transported in sealed half-height 20ft containers rather than hoppers.
    • Not very prominent, it stands a lofty 21 metres above sea level Wink

    Pictures I have make it look as though GWA 002 is riding on transfer bogies... It's not, she's just stolen some shoes from the car in front.

    There is some confusion above.
    There are two facilities at Wirrida which have no relationship with each other.
    One is the OZ minerals siding parallel to the loop, this is the mineral concentrate referred to which goes in container type kibbles to Port Adelaide where I understand they are unloaded by Rotainer.
    Just north of the crossing loop there is a balloon loop which was developed by WPG for iron ore which was to have been unloaded at Port Pirie from the reinstated radium siding and barged out. This was the operation which was bought by OneSteel/ Arrium and the ore is taken to the new unloading loop at Whyalla. This is the service affected by the derailment.

    In this view you can see the small balloon loop on the right. The haul road on the left os OZ, the one on the right is Arrium

    I have heard it was not the new SG line unloader but the old Hummock Hill dump pit

    Can people have a good read and understand the current rail infrastructure status - before jumping to any conclusions about "where it hapened"...it was where it is.....Whyalla balloon loop. Shocked

    Perhaps Topcat, you might need to aquaint yourself with Whyalla SG geography. The derailment was NOT,  repeat NOT on the baloon loop.
    Or not where it is.

    I absolutely love being wrong...so if it wasn't at the unloading bins on the balloon loop....where pray tell was it it.....I have no idea, I wasn't there but I would love to knwo.......all the info thus far talks of the unloading pocket and the resultant GWA engine being caught up in the "derailed last wagon on the ore train being unloaded"...so yes me too please (if someone can)...where oh where.Shocked

    The closest point of the derailment is still more than a trains length clear of the entrance to the balloon loop. Those that need to know the exact location do know. Otherwise it was in Whyalla.
