Railway Archaeology: where is it? #2

No Jibbo,

I can remember no building at Kywong even when the line was open, a vast grain bunker and a house were the structural improvements there.

There was a station - http://www.nswrail.net/locations/show.php?name=NSW:Kywong

Obviously before our time though..Wink

Building must have been there years ago but I can only remember the station master's residence. So small that the house and grain bunker dominated it.

Look further north.

Still trying to get the abandoned station picture up.

Cuz, from what I could see in the url, you had one too many lots of http//www in there. I took those out, pasted the tweaked url in a fresh tab, and found a pic of Cumnock station. I had another view of the yard in as a wherizzit pic in this quiz not so long ago.

Yes Wurx, it sure is Cumnock. If I try often enough I might work it out one day.

Alright already - where would you find this overgrown section of track?

Alternate views are available if need be Smile

A scrub formed of elm suckers is uncommon about the Illawarra, so perhaps it could be near Cullen Bullen.

AFAIK Cullen Bullen still has coalies passing through it regularly, so we can cross that one off.

This line hasn't seen a train for nearly 30yrs.

Location: Southern Riverina
The old Cullen Bullen collieries branch has been closed for much more than 30 years but some traces of it can be found. They may look a little like the line pictured. Trains do not pass through Cullen Bullen township where the line went.

I may have the right region so will go for Portland now.

Regrettably you don't have the right region at all cuz, you need to head southwards.

The pic provided isn't a usual view of this location (nor are the alternate ones).

My bandwidth is exceeded so I can receive little more than text now. What I thought to be scrubby regrowth with broken coal on the surface, typical of Cullen Bullen may not be so.

Will try for Westby instead.

Maybe Windowie?
  wurx Lithgovian Ambassador-at-Large

Neither of them. No track at Westby or anywhere on that branch; it was one of the few that was closed by the Yacta Parla Ment, so it was all (AFAIK) lifted. If you look closely at the pic, you can see rails in among the poplars or whatever they are.

Loosely speaking, both guesses are in the right part of the state, and one is - sort of - on the right line.

I had thought that the marks on the left were branches or photographic blurring. (not game to enlarge pic with reduced pc speed)

Maybe it is the Holbrook line at Culcairn ?

No one has it yet, but the jibster has the right line now.

I will say it is at the beginning of that line. There is a resemblance to the slightly swampy country just south of the junction at Cootamundra and some trackage there has been lifted.

Not there, Rodo. As is true of most of this line, there is still track aplently, apart from where roads have interfered with it. Would have been a location of some significance in its day.

Here's the first pic again, plus two more:

This station was in use when the picture was taken but line is now disused and I think the building is demolished. That should qualify it as archaeology.

I've seen it before in other photos, but beyond saying the building looks VR-ish, not sure to nail it yet Sad
