Broken boom at Lilydale

    Location: Lilydale, Vic
    Couldn't add to the "Disruptions" thread as it said it was locked.

    About 30 mins ago somebody must have clipped the down end boom at Maroondah Hwy. As I tried to cross there was a large bankup of cars with lights flashing and the boom snapped off about 2 metres from the hinge. A city train was sitting halfway between the end of the platform and the crossing looking as though he was checking it out. After about 10 mins it crossed the highway with police assistance.

    Heard on the grapevine a truck took it out. Cameras and $10,000 fine may reduce the incidence to almost nil until grade separation. But I guess it's better to put the cameras where revenue is guaranteed, not where they may save lives.

    Can't be that hard, given SA have it already at some crossings

    At the nearby pedestrian crossing at Lilydale they have a Red Light cameras pointing in both directions, the one facing the railway may have recorded the above incident.............................

    According to the road rules, a road vehicle can not enter a level crossing until the lights (where fitted) stop flashing.

    On closings with booms fitted the lights stop flashing only when the booms are fully open.

    But many road users enter the crossing as soon a the booms start raising (that's the same as going though a red signal)

    Traffic cameras could earn the Government a mint.

    I can tell you that crossing on the Midland Highway at Bagshot, every driver Is on their best behaviour due to the prssance of the traffic camera.

    You could also add traffic lights thereby ending the "Wait till the lights stop flashing? What a stupid rule!" debate.

    Saw someone in a white VE Commodore ute do exactly this when I was checking out Mitcham last week. As soon as the gates moved, so did he, even though the traffic light itself was still red.

    The red light cameras would only be focussed on the pedestrian crossing - and they don't continously record movements. They're only triggered when the car runs a red (or speeds if it does both).

    There are some other crossings which are protected in this way, for example at Rosanna.  Cheaper than grade separation I suppose, and probably almost as effective in preventing collisions (but not for traffic flow).  It's funny how motorists will invariably go through a crossing before the booms are fully up and the lights have stopped, or will attempt to run a crossing as the booms are starting down, but will generally obey a regular traffic light.

    You don't want to be first in the queue at a level crossing, if you are going to wait until the booms are fully up AND the lights have stopped ......  in some cases the lights will continue to flash for a few seconds after the booms are fully up - why is that?

    Heatherton Road Noble Park has Orange and Red (but no green) traffic lights around the roundabout to the West of the crossing. Before the booms go the lights will go Orange and then Red, I would assume to allow the traffic coming down Heatherton Road to exit the crossing before the gates go down.

    It seems a lot of people will just drive through the red light there as if its not the same as running a red.

    It is a bit of a pain, but I am sure it reduces the issue of vehicles being 'trapped' on the crossing due to the traffic on the roundabout not allowing them to clear the crossing.
