First one leaves about 1015hrs, then leaves Adelaide about 1100hrs......etc.
Last one arrives Adelaide about 1310hrs, then departs at about 1330hrs for Bombardier Depot at Dry Creek.
I tried to get on, but no public...just PTS and NRM drivers.
I don't know what younger readers think.Good point there steam4ian as streamlining fads come and go and date things, the Red Hens and Bluebirds never seem to be out of place, no matter how old they are. They and the Blueys though were built to last not like a lot of stuff today that is sort of disposable after a set period of time.
But I am surprised how little their appearance has not aged.
I don't know what younger readers think.I don't know how old you are Ian but as someone in their early 30's (Like the jumbos) I still love the look of the Red Hens and would be happy to see them out more often. However being well looked after by the great team at the NRM makes a huge difference to their look as well. If they were still in normal service they would have the grime and dirt build up that goes with it, as they had in original service.
But I am surprised how little their appearance has aged.
Edited thanks to SAR526.
An 800 with 7 ECLs would be almost as good, particularly barking up the bank through Seacliff. To celebrate 801's 60th birthday in 2016, we would organize a special tour with the loco hauling some historic BG carriages from Adelaide Railway Station to some stations beyond Gawler Central.

As things like higher platforms and wheelchair ramps have been added to a lot of station platforms not to mention whole new platforms installed in the last few years either. And trucking them from Steamranger to use would only up the price for tickets. The clearances are now set for modern railcars to reduce the gap so that could mean it may never be able to be done.
....with the loco hauling some historic BG carriages from Adelaide Railway Station to some stations beyond Gawler Central. What stations beyond Gawler Central ?
I must apoligize to Scooter Guy I mis read that as past Gawler, but I have to agree with Fabricators post though, there is not much left past Gawler Central in the way of passenger use that is safe to actually use. To use a 800 diesel you also need a usable run around loop as well somewhere. Unless of course the train can be taken to some other place to run round while the passengers get a bit of exercise.800 & some other small/medium diesels can either run cab-first or nose-first at any desired speed, pushing or pulling trains like a tank type steam engine would. See videos of Victoria's Bellarine Railway for example.
