Unless everyone has a smart phone and know how to deal with those stores and apps flying around, printed timetable and booklets are still necessities in stations. They can't assume that once they got everything on the web, those low-in-use, outdated publications can be removed immediately. Even with a high frequency, Tokyo Metro continue to publish departure times on information board. So why Sydney don't need it?

The gov just keep spending excessive amount of tax revenue on what they think "brand image", without anymore customer improvements other than a chaotic timetable rewrite. What customers feel is the real image, and if they nail that with quality service, they won't need those posters to advertise it over and over.

I was at Waterfall Station yesterday morning. (I was at 141 different stations yesterday, but that's another story.) A new sheet timetable is on display for "T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line". It shows all the services from Waterfall and to Waterfall ... but not the Cronulla services, not the express interurban services which pass through Waterfall, and not the "local" services which start/end at Hurstville. In other words, only about ?25% of the T4 timetable is displayed and a commuter having nothing but that sheet to look at would have no idea how to get to Como or Oatley (except the last three trains each night). Another example of treating the public like absolute morons.

Kiama and Bombo have full sheet timetables for the South Coast line. Not sure how long they have been up.

Of course, the other thing to consider is that, on a long day out, if we have to keep resorting to apps then the batteries on our devices will eventually run down. I have often left Katoomba at around 0600, and have needed to recharge by around 1400 (luckily, I have had my charger with me, and it has given me an excuse to pop into a pub for an hour and seat mysealf at a seat near a powerpoint) - but not everybody carries a charger with them all the time.

Possibly because every train stopping at St Peters has the same stopping pattern? Actually, this is no longer true, is it, with some Up services taking the City Inner but most during the day taking the City Outer.

Skip-stop services stop at St Peters now in both am and pm peak and those city bound services take the City inner while all-stops services take the city outer. Your right about how most city bound services outside of peak hours take the city inner to feed back on the same line. Still no electronic screen displays for down services heading towards Liverpool or Lidcombe though...

..........and now the "corporate image" disease has infected buses.  We used to have what were termed "Region Guides", showing all the bus routes in particular regions.  You could get a rough idea of the options available for getting from A to B.
Not any more!  Region Guides are no longer printed.  Nor can I find them on the 'net.  Here's what the transportnsw.info website has to say -

"Whether a customer is a regular commuter, or visitor, or needs to reach somewhere they have never been before, the information they have access to should be accurate, direct and easy, on any device, all the time."

Note the assumption that everyone has a "device".

Millions wasted on train operator name changes and new uniforms.  No understanding of the need for hard timetable and route information.

Um, the State Transit Authority region guides are still available online; you only need to Google them up, and the PDF link should come up first.

They're not that useful, though, as the information is massively cluttered and while it tells you that the 305 goes via Bourke Rd and the 333 goes via Bondi Rd, it doesn't tell you that the 305 is an infrequent, weekday peak-only service operating in reverse peak direction that is basically useless unless you happen to commute out to the Qantas base in Mascot, while the 333 is an all-day/every-day frequent service you can use spontaneously (i.e. a much, much more useful service).

The paper versions of the Region Guides, my dear Watson, had the service level information on the back, so it was easy to differentiate between frequent and infrequent services.

Well, Richmond, for example, has neither.  It does have the "information' poster, with the obligatory smiling face, wearing the new uniform, advising how easy everything is with no less than SEVEN apps.

The classic "little old ladies" will be overjoyed.

Wrong. Richmond has one platform indicator, on Platform #2, next to the ticket office.
