Structures being built at stations?

    I've recently noticed a structure that's been built at Ivanhoe station and another in the process of being built at Fairfield, does anyone know what these are? they are boxes about 6 metres wide and 3 metres high with a dark tinted window in the middle.

    It would be the PSO Buildings, I've seen them going up at a few stations (One Under construction at Ringwood East currently)

    And they cost more to build than your average house.

    Actually that's wrong. The government has been charged more for them than a reasonably large house actually costs to build.

    Why would they not use the existing (and in many cases, unused) station buildings? It would be cheaper and in many cases; less of an eyesore.

    They're too lazy to put up police ribbons on structures, and you'd inevitably get community complaints that they uglify the train station.

    That, and it'd bring attention to the fact the station buildings are unused.

    I'm actually (pleasantly?) surprised how well they integrated the PSO office in with the rest of Melton station. Same colour paint, virtually the same structure as the station and other sheds on the station. Thankfully it wasn't one of those blue and white Borg buildings!

    You mean building new boxes uglify the stations, right? Using existing buildings doesn't uglify anything...
    There's plenty of empty station buildings & rooms.

    From memory, you will find that they assessed all the existing buildings to see if they could work with what the PSOs needed, from an admin area, room to lock offenders up and their own meal/toilet facilities. They also had to be able to do their duties without getting in the way of station staff or needing station staff around to unlock doors etc.

    There have been locations where existing buildings have been used.  Interestingly this discussion shows the value in having a separate building as clearly they're a lot more visible than where the current buildings have been modified!

    Put simply, it is often cheaper to put a new building in than modify an existing building. It avoids many of the heritage issues that go with existing buildings. Also remember, that the 'pods' have holding areas in them - which I'm sure have some pretty strict requirements.

    I noticed the other day they used the existing buildings are Croydon for it, I only noticed when there was a new window (one of those long black ones) in amongst the brickwork that I remember was never there in the past.
