Today there was a hive of activity. As well as the bridge team and the water main guys, there were people laying conduit across Mitcham Road, the power guys removed (or replaced) a pole, and people working north of the crossing with cabling of some sort.

At around 11AM the pad poured yesterday was getting covered in reo:

Meanwhile, at the station, the new deck for the station building is also well-and-truly knitted with reo:

Later, around 5:30PM the reo on the bridge had been increased in height, and form work was being installed ready for the pour. The new bridge looks like it will be quite a bit higher than the existing road, so for a few months motorists will have a climb up from the railway crossing to the bridge surface:

Not certain what the angled bits of reo sticking up above the mesh are, but they seem to be in line with the existing footpath, so perhaps might be gutter? Probably not - I have no idea what's going on:

I am unsure what the local Mitcham area is like, as I come from Eltham, but I am sure your area, much like mine, loves their cars and find it much more better than public buses which are often infrequent and unreliable.

Had a look yesterday afternoon. The concrete had been poured and everything was nicely covered in thermal wrap to unsure that the concrete cured properly:

Naturally, with the concrete done there wasn't much change today, but between removing the wooden formwork and adding the thermal wrap over the sides, there was a chance to see the depth of the pour:

The whole thing will be wrapped up against the heat and cold for four days, and then the asphalt will be laid:

Meanwhile work continues furiously on the preparation for the relocation of the water pipes. Valves are being inserted into the mains on either side of the work, so that later the water pipes can be laid along the outside of the bridge with minimal disruption. They are also beginning to remove the formwork around the massive blocks which have been poured. No idea what they are for, nor how they will be moved, but later this week we should know the answer to the first question, at least:

Time for today's update on the Mitcham works.

Work is progressing on the approaches to what will be the bridge, with a thin layer of concrete poured between the existing asphalt road surface and the new bridge deck. This concrete has also been temporarily covered with plastic. Note in the photo below there is now a clear sight line down the trench and underneath the new station building decking:

Mystery solved! A discussion with an engineer revealed that what I thought were huge blocks of concrete were instead slabs, each layer (as seen by the reo) separated from the one above it by plastic. They are to be used used on top of the approach to the bridge deck (shown in the above photo), placed side-by-side with the reo loops interlocking, so that more lengths of reo can be inserted through the loops. The gaps between the slabs will then be in-filled with concrete. This is a time-saver - the engineer explained that there would not be sufficient time to pour the concrete road base after the bridge deck was completed. These pre-fab slabs of concrete are to be shifted onto the road tonight.

At the up-end of the station a new bridge for the third water main has been installed. This bridge, in line with Simla Street, will be alongside the road bridge gaining entry to the carpark.

The engineer I was chatting with also said the excavation under the new Mitcham Road bridge will not be done until the railway is shut in January.

Our Thursday afternoon visit showed that the pre-fab slabs were all in place, and preparations were well underway for adding the asphalt:

By Friday morning the asphalting was in progress:

This view shows the gutter. The formwork in the background looks to be for a barrier on the platform "outside" the bridge (outside the footpath) which I suspect will carry the water pipes.

We returned after 6pm on Friday 27 and just about everything was done. The sealing was complete with line markings, and the few people around were tidying up. The pedestrian crossing has been moved from the south side of the crossing to the north side. Saturday morning the road was open. The workers were having a well earned weekend off after working 12-hour smeg for seven days straight, and that formwork was still in place. Presumably the concrete will be visible tomorrow.

So we now have a top-down bridge. I shall continue documenting the works, but on a weekly (or less frequent) basis, as significant events occur in the area.

It's been three weeks since the road closure. Work is progressing well down in the trench, with platforms taking shape nicely:

On the eastern side of Mitcham Road the top strip of concrete above the cutting walls is also taking shape:

Work in continuing at the up end, with the trench slowly moving in an up direction. It's past time that I inspected Rooks Road - I shall do so sometime in the next few days.

Do you think it looks like the makings of an island platform, ala Nunawading? Also, width of the cutting, scope for 3 (or more) tracks, 40 years into the future?

I don't believe that there any plans for an island platform, although I guess if they ever add a third track it would happen. I've also looked at the gap between the platforms and wondered whether there was room for three tracks. It's hard to tell, because without the track laid it's hard to get a sensible idea about the width, but I doubt whether there's room there.

We walked over the new road bridge tonight, and noticed that the down platform is now concrete over half its length, and a second "blue building" has appeared up on the decking. Things are moving along...

I did pop up on both Sunday and Monday, but other than the massive station building taking shape, and a lot of work on some power poles on Mitcham Road north of the crossing, it was difficult to see much as the footpath on the western (station) side is closed. It looks as though the structures for the platform canopies are being erected, and the trench west of the station (in the up direction) is being dug now. I did take some photos, but haven't had the time to get them off the camera yet. Hopefully later today...

The only reason I could see for the occupation on Sunday was the power was out at the level crossing end of the station. The down signal at the end of the platform was not lit. Whether that was the only reason, or work was being done at Rooks Road, I don't know.

It's been a long time since I posted photos of progress at Mitcham Road. I've been away a fair bit, and very busy when at home, but still tried to take photos on a weekly basis. Whenever I had the time, and was ready to post them to RP, RP wasn't ready for me. Here are some taken last Friday.

The footpath on the western side of the new bridge was closed for a week or two, but it's been reopened. Visibility down into the new station is difficult though, as there is a lot of scaffolding in the way.

There has been stairs installed onto the down platform. I assume these are the permanent steps, and not just for workers:

The Simla Street entrance into the future car park is getting close to being ready for the pour. Interestingly a notice board at the station showing progress had the slab under the station building captioned as Simla Street, at a time when absolutely nothing had been done there.

Another inspection of progress was carried out on Friday.

The new station building has had very high roofs installed. The new building is substantially higher and much more dominating than the current building - despite the platforms being way below street level the building looks to be twice as high:

The SImla Street bridge has been poured. It looks like a nice wide footpath for pedestrians:

The concrete pump is filling up the space around the pipe line feeding the Mitcham reservoir:

I toured the works today.

The station building has grown massive roofs, high up above each of the platforms (and protecting the ramps from the elements). Whether those down on the platform will be protected from rain coming in at an angle remains to be seen, but you can see a shelter down at platform level which will keep a few people dry:

Some idea of the height of the station building and roofs can be gauged from this view, The bullnose awning lower right is the shelter over the old bus stops (from memory):

The trench on the up side has been lowered by another slice, with shotcrete applied to stabilize the cutting walls:

Up at the corner of Calcutta and Simla Street, the bridge providing access to the car park is moving ahead. From this angle you can see that the water main and car/pedestrian bridges are not parallel, something I had not noticed when viewing them from the platform:

Rooks Road was meant to be closed for road traffic for the weekend, but it was open by the time I got there, soon after 12:30pm. The work was presumably the installation of piles driven into the road along the line of the to-be-dug cutting wall:

Here you can see how the piles, visible by the fresh tar over the top, line up with the concrete wall beyond, on the up side of Rooks Road. There's not enough room here to dig a trench beside the active railway line, so come January and the shut, Rooks Road will be closed, a trench dug wide enough of two tracks (gradually moving into alignment with the existing line), and a bridge erected:

I don't think there's a real need for three tracks past Blackburn just yet, and although express services between Ringwood and Box Hill would be really useful (convenient), I just don't see it happening any time soon.

The two-tier rail system simply hasn't caught on yet, where all-stations trains stopping at the lesser-used stops like Heatherdale (for example) could be every 30 minutes while express trains run every 10 minutes. With the 901 SmartBus being parallel to the rail line, the need for trains stopping all stations between Ringwood and Blackburn should have been diminished, as with the 279 between Laburnum (Middleborough Rd) and Box Hill (that empty space at Laburnum station was left there for a reason, don't turn it into Heyington).

Paid another visit to the works today. The station area was a hive of activity - the platforms are being covered in asphalt and the stairs on the down platform are being tiled. Not the overhead stanchions in place:

There was also much activity on the down side of new bridge, with concrete mixers delivering their product. I was unable to get to the eastern side of the bridge due to this work, but I assume the pour was related to the barriers located on top of the trench, where they curve around from running parallel to the line to across it.

From the up end of the platform we could see much work being done in the Simla Street bridge, and also the up-end trench could be seen reasonably clearly, with piles and shotcrete:

At Rooks Road work is progressing on the up-side retaining wall, with the pile-driver working in the background:

One downside of the grade separation is the removal of the summit, between Mitcham and Rooks Road. This photo taken with my little point and shoot is lacking a bit - I will have to go back with my DSLR for a better photo:

Mitcham Road will be closed to road traffic this weekend so that the new intersection with Calcutta Street and Brunswick Road can be constructed. I can't get there until Sunday, but will see what happens then.

We walked up to Mitcham a couple of times during the last week. On Sunday the road was closed to rebuild the intersection, but the trains ran as normal. There was lots of roadwork activity (which looks like roadwork anywhere) but there was a also lot of work going on down at the new station:

One of the security gates was open in Calcutta Street, allowing me to pop my head in and take a street level view of the new building:

A couple of days later the view down over the station was (a) much clearer as some of the scaffolding had been removed, and (b) very quiet, compared to Sunday:

This view shows the ramp down to the up platform. It's a long way down - and I guess for people in wheelchairs, it will feel even longer up the ramp. Fortunately common sense prevailed and lifts have been incorporated in the building:

Thanks for the news Madjikthise. I haven't been able to find a vantage point allowing a view along the eastern-end of the trench to (and now under) Mitcham Rd. Obviously visible from a passing train, but I haven't felt inclined to catch a train just for a look.

We made another visit to Mitcham this afternoon. The big news is that rail has been laid down in the trench. Things are moving along - we have rubbish bins on the platforms, and there are security cameras and loud speakers installed all over the place:

I was wondering from whigh direction the rail and sleepers came, but further inspection of this photo shows rail and ballast (or stone used to protect the rail) running away from the obvious track in the up direction:

It's impossible to see what's happening in the trench under the Simla Street bridge and onwards towards Rooks Road, but this shot from the up end of the current platform shows overhead stanchions poking above the cutting walls:

In the up direction from the new Mitcham Road bridge there has been more work done on the overhead stanchions. This is not a "double deck" portal, but a portal nearer the camera, and a single stanchion cantilever structure beyond. I guess it's possible that this might be converted to a portal when the old line is cut and work can extend into the current formation:

After a very quiet Christmas-New Year period, with the shutdown of the railway line last night, furious activities have commenced at Mitcham and Rooks Road. Unfortunately the old station is now considered part of the construction site, so viewing of the work is quite limited at Mitcham - today pedestrians were allowed just on the western side of the level crossing.

I drove across the LC on my way to lunch and noticed teams of people dismantling the overhead. On my return I noted that the overhead had been removed from the commencements of works on the up side of Rooks Road at least up to the level crossing, and when I walked up to Mitcham it had been removed there:

All the removed wire was dumped into a front-end loader, and then onto a truck tgo be taken away. Despite there being no trains it was often a slow journey to cross the railway line by car:

From the crossing looking east (down) we can see workers removing fittings, etc, from the stanchions:

FInally, after a quick trip to the supermarket for some provisions, on the return I see that track has been broken between the pedestrian and the road crossings:

I was able to see that the myki readers had been removed at the old station. I did travel on the train yesterday, the last day of services, but from Ringwood through Mitcham into the city and back. So I passed through the old station on its last day of operation, but did not use it.
