Siemens trains don't run on the South Morang line.

You really didn't read the post by Metroemployee at all, did you? They're trying to help explain why Hitachi trains are rarely used. In general terms. I didn't see anything in their post specifically talking about one line or another.

Honestly what the hell did South Morang have anything to do with what he said?

"Raichase"

Yes I did, and I'll say it's quite rude of you to accuse me of not reading it. I'm just saying that because currently, the Hitachi that gets used only runs on the South Morang line. So yes, I understand perfectly what he's saying, that they're unfortunately very expensive to run, and that's why the Hitachi is used so little.

Looks like I missed it again. I have been catching 7.16 am out of Lalor now in the hope the a Hitachi would be running as previously I had seen them running that service.
This is just supposition but with Metro running reduced services over the holidays this gives them a chance to catch up on any maintenance backlog of the fleet. Of course with the fleet better maintaned then there is less need for the Hitachi's. Could see them finally pensioned off.

Dave, I'd refer you to this older post by Henry, it seems to support your theory:

Metro Trains Melbourne has stored their Hitachi fleet at locations across Melbourne. (3x 6 Cars at Macauly) (2x 6 Cars at Newport) (1x 6 Cars at Craigieburn) (1x 6 Cars at Epping) Since August 2013 the Hitachi trains have been doing empty car runs from Eltham to Epping and return to keep the fleet operational in case of "emergency use". Today was the last day for those transfers.... One 6 car set is at Epping and will be used in emergency uses until the 20th of December when it will run to Broadmeadows for storage. In the new Summer timetable, all Hitachi trains will be officially removed from service.

What is special about Hitachis which keeps you people interested?

Now; please!. . . before people jump up and down and call me a philistine . . . my interest is not suburban trains, but I know that others like them.  So, my question is just that - a question - and I'm not having a shot at anyone.

I'd put it down to the fact that they're basically a heritage train still in revenue service - everything about them screams of a different era, a reminder when the railways had character. The modern Melbourne trains are all very samey and sterile in my eyes, no opening windows, the same hard seating, a lack of honest noises. The opening windows, the compressors, the very function of these trains. I've always made an effort to see them on my own visits to Melbourne, as the modern trains have no charm, no character like the old trains. It's always been the same for me in Sydney with the S Sets, they're the last of a dying age.

Chance of getting one tomorrow?
MrToastyy
I managed to catch it on Monday. today on other forums rail Victoria it was spotted running again. it might run tomorrow. the service that it will run will be the 7:57am up flinders and 8:47am down south morang to epping. it's just luck so don't expect it to be there although I think it will run. I've never seen it run on Fridays though, maybe in past but not for a while.

oh my word sorry for the confusion. what I meant to have said was that I have never seen a hitachi run a FRIDAY service for a long time if not ever.  I've tried going on Fridays in the past couple months but have been unlucky, they seem to run only Monday-Thursday for some reason. that's what I've noticed (other people may say different). due to recent events you might catch it tomorrow if you go and prove my Friday theory wrong. please tell me if it runs because I am curious to know if it will or not. take a picture and upload if you can and goodluck Smile

Remember the hitachi will run the 8:47am down epping departing flinders platform 1

Error of omission, I'm a Sydney resident, so have only ridden on the one set. My apologies, that's certainly another point in their favour.

From Seaford to the city, I can get out of a Hitachi and feel ready for a day of work. In anything newer, the seats are so hard and uncomfortably cramped, I feel like I need about a days worth of physio to get the cramps out of my knees and back.

To me, they were built in an era where people actually planned and thought about passenger comfort, not just how many bums on seats they could cram into the one carriage.

Plus with the windows down it feels like you are travelling at near light speed on some sections. Makes me feel like being a kid all over again. Smile

I like people who think that way. I do agree that Hitachis have the most comfortable seats of the suburban trains. I also love hearing the noises that a Hitachi makes.

There's only one set stabled at Macauley at the moment. Either they have moved it or it's doing runs on the network.
