The Prime Minister's wife, Margie Abbott, was there and so were the top brass of the railways. The Make-a-Wish Foundation had assembled hundreds of children at Central Station for a steam-train ride to Rosehill  and a picnic.

The chief executives of Sydney Trains and NSW Trains, Howard Collins and Rob Mason, gathered to be photographed with the 120-year-old steam locomotive. The railway band played carols.

But, despite the cheer, there was an air of tension around those in the know at Central's platform one on Thursday.

The first steam loco constructed in Australia was the first to run in Australia.
See http://www.rahs.org.au/history-resources/the-first-railway/

So the Herald article was only out by nearly a century.   It also only tells one side of the story.

The Herald article is not completely correct either regarding the railway in Victoria as being first railway constructed and opened in Australia in 1854
The first railway constructed and opened in Australia was at Newcastle over 20 years earlier in December 1831

That lease expired in 2006, and then railways head Vince Graham moved 3801 out of Eveleigh into the control of Thirlmere. For Mr Hill, this was a tragedy, compounded by the fact that 3801 has not run since 2007, the victim of a badly mishandled boiler replacement.

Strictly speaking, the locomotive built for the opening of the Hobson's Bay company was not entirely built in Australia, the wheel-sets came from England. And the Phoenix Foundry, while building hundreds of locomotives for the state railway, was still importing wheels for many years.

vince yes that is him.

took National Rail from a customer driven organisation to pushing a vast amount of freight off rail and onto road. would not operate on private sidings and would not use port of adelaide or port of melbourne for customers.  the railways in australia have never recovered from this clown.

sct arose from the need to run their own trains for lcl as he basically did not want the business.

what were his thoughts behind releasing 3801 to Thirmere?
