It's been a while since anyone's posted here, so I might as well add my 2c: I also noticed the other day that tracks have now been laid across the intersection of high street and nerang street.

I could not resist composing my little story above about the bit outside the hospital as we went through the intersection today. They have been busy on the track work.

Is there a reason they laid the track and surrounding concrete slightly higher than the road level, so you get a nice bump driving over the crossings?

Thought it was time I uploaded some photos, mostly taken with my phone.

The Mainbeach Burleigh Heads road construction tramway was about 90 years ago. The new Gold Coast tramway route will cross and use part of the original route, although with very different technology.

A sample of the new technology was observed in action today as tramway rails for the new Gold Coast passenger tram [aka Light Rail Project] were unloaded along the Gold Coast Highway, St Kilda Ave traffic light intersection, Cascade Gardens, Broadbeach QLD 12 April 2013.

The plastic encasing the rail base and sides can be seen by zooming in close in the following downloadable image from                                         https://docs.google.com/file/d/0ByB-ppGeDyvwaXl6dDhsNjZucjg/edit?ups=drive_web

Semi had an oversize sign with what seemed to be an extended length trailer.

Three Gold Coast tram construction images from last week. The steel work image is the eastern side and the other with less steel is the western side. Both outside the Australia Fair shopping center at the pedestrian lights. New road traffic signals for the Gold Coast trams have appeared near the soon to be replaced Southport Hospital in Nerang St. They have an extra signal which presently displays a red "T" .

The name of one of the Gold Coast tram stations is already out of date as of 8am this morning [Saturday] when the Gold Coast Hospital [Southport] finally closed for new patients. If visiting the area and you need a hospital, go to the new one near Griffith University at Parklands with exit off Smith St Motorway. If you go to the old one today [Saturday] you will see a fleet of ambulances transferring patients to the new one.

I inspected the Southport tram test and training operations recently. These observations include the ramp used for the highway transport vehicle, signal operation, track and overhead features as well as other matters. A PDF of my observations and images are at https://docs.google.com/file/d/0ByB-ppGeDyvwYkd5Q3lsLVNSbUk/edit

Noted today that they are testing up to the bridge over the Nerang River.  Spotted 2 trams there, unfortunately didn't have my phone with me so no photos.  The bridge itself still had a barrier across the tracks.

The Overheads wire will be online on 22 January 2014,  Trams will now go to Surfers Paradise North,  it will go to south surfers paradise later after testing extension date,  because of the limit of overhead wire's power station.
spotted a overhead wire Power station.

-Southport corner of Nerang and Queen st, its online
-north surfers paradise next to Marriott hotel on a intersection of Gold Coat hwy and Surfers Paradise Blvd, online on 22 January 2014
-South surfers paradise next to Free Duty shop in Wharf Rd, it is still offline, will online later after above.
-Broadbeach in the out front of Pacific Fair on the Gold Coast hwy but still offline, overhead wire not installed yet.

Temporary cross over point laid on top of concrete just north of Nerang River Bridge. I did try walking to there but lots of safety fences.

Track in the Nerang River bridge also seems to be open between the rails but filled in with concrete between the north and southbound sets of rails. Hard to be precise while driving a car safely.

***** if at Southport in the very near future have a camera equipped friend in the passenger seat as you drive northbound over the Sundale Bridge. Stay in left lane and passenger starts clicking camera as you leave the bridge and hopefully you might score a better image than ours of the temporary crossover laid on top of the rails in the concrete. This is a **temporary** crossover so will not be there forever!!!
