THE builders of the $1.2 billion light rail system will today lay the final piece of the track, marking a major milestone in the city's biggest transport project.

The 13km track runs from Parkwood to Broadbeach, with the last concrete pour planned for Surfers Paradise Boulevard at 12pm.
GoldLinQ will lay the final section of track after 30,000km of underground services was upgraded and relocated along the corridor.
CEO Phil Mumford said the team was relieved to have the track finished this year as the system moves full steam ahead towards taking passengers next June.

The statement "GoldLinQ will lay the final section of track after 30,000km of underground services was upgraded and relocated along the corridor" does not ring true. Does anyone have any idea how long 30,000 km really is?

No Geoff as the overhead was not in place on the Nerang River bridge when we drove past tonight and maybe other places as well as the highway does not completely follow the tram route.  I suspect hi-rail vehicles have tested track for gauge etc but have no proof of that.

Your argument would be right if it was only wire.

However, the real story is far different - that 30,000 km comprises not only electricity and communications cables, but also includes gas supply piping, water supply piping, sewerage piping and stormwater piping, PLUS a fairly substantial allowance of 'spare' services conduits to allow future upgrading of the city services with minimum future 'digging up' around the light rail track base.
