Why in the name of Mazeppa do we need 2 N's on an 8 car load?  A single N could do that job standing on its ear.

In short, I don't know. But as a general comment just about everyone (freight and passenger) seems to overpower to a greater or lesser extent these days:

  • Are the schedules beyond single loco capacity? The loads are not!
  • Are they dead scared of loco reliability these days?
  • Given that everything runs like a shaggy dog these days is it an attempt to make up time?
  • The same seems to happen quite often with wagons too where empties are hauled in both directions.

As I say, these days, I don't know but presumably someone out there in RP land will  have some answers.

From my experience in scheduling, most trains (freight and passenger) are timetabled based on a hpt ratio (Horsepower per tonne). PN's expresses worked on a ratio of 2.5, freighter at 2 and the steel train at 1.8.

The Vline pass probably run a very high ratio to ensure they can maintain the timetable. 5 cars may be the maximum for an N if the table is to be maintained.

G536 - A71 - P20 in Donald for about the third time this week loading their grainy.   Will be heading back south later today.
  ab123 Chief Train Controller

2 N classes are used to maintain the schedule as said above. When the SN sets were on the BG the trains they were used on were just about always late due to the heavier load that timetabled for.

Are you seriously telling me that a 2500 HP locomotive can't maintain the timetable with more than 5 cars along a track that's as flat as a nightman's hat? If so, either the timetable is wrongly worked out, or the N class is a dud.
  G41 Chief Commissioner

Location: Footplate of any K class
The 20ft container wagon is actually a 40ft CQIY. And it came off 9471 last week account bad wheel condition.
  G41 Chief Commissioner

Location: Footplate of any K class
I'd say it's more to do with the high acceleration and braking force needed to maintain the timetable. Two N's would get away a lot quicker than 1 N. Just a though
