...just spotted this...just posted on NRM's website....Very Happy

Genesee & Wyoming Aust Donates diesel loco 517 to NRM
NRM is very appreciative to receive 500 class broad gauge shunt engine 517, as a donation from GWA. It is due for delivery on Thursday 19 December 2013. This locomotive is not fully operational, however it becomes the third 500 class donated by GWA to the SA rail heritage sector - SteamRanger, Steamtown and now NRM.

It is planned for 517 to take over as the prime broad gauge shunter - thus relieving 801 of those duties; however the latter will be used for special occasions.

Thanks again to GWA.

Can't wait for delivery pics, if possible!
517 may run nose-first like 801.
517 was built in 1967.

This is a surprise (& fantastic).

I assume it would've been delivered by an 830 class loco.

Now that I'm on Work Hols until late January, I might head to the museum on either Mon/Tue for some pics!

Also, I believe the transfer of 517 will depart Dry Creek south at 8pm tonight, & it will probably go via the Gawler line to Torrens Junction, then onto the OH line. Quite possie that an 830 could be used either side of 517.

...just heard from the Rosewater cat, that the special delivery movement is now on Sunday night approx 2045hrs from Dry Creek Sth to NRM via Adelaide and Woodville. Expected arrival at 2200hrs, and after shunting off 517, the two GWA engines will return light to Dry Creek.  It's likely these movements will use the Gaol Loop turnback. Meeoww!

I might try at Kilkenny tonight, I have roughly figured out the times it should pass through but will get there earlier to make sure!

Now that the cat is out of the bag yes you are right as that is what was supposed to happen the other night. I dont know in which order they will be though but they will be top and tailing 517 for ease of turnaround at the Jail loop siding.

Yet to reach Dudley Park, hope it hasn't been delayed (or postponed again). Although I'm not sure how fast they'll be able to travel.

Departed Dry Creek at 9:15pm, was only doing around 15km/h through Dudley Park.

Just for reference, the consisting to Adelaide was 704-517-841. Also, I don't understand all of this Gaol Loop siding talk, it has been closed ever since last January's shut down! Infact, the Stop board denoting track closure is before the signal to Exit the siding.

In any instance, the consist got to Wye Junction on the North Main UP, took an order to proceed onto the Port Main DOWN track to just behind the signal infront of the old Wye Cabin.

I think the slow speed through Dudley Park (& other stations) would've been a precaution (platform clearances).

517 is now stored in Jackets siding

When I left the the Port, 704 841 were waiting at the stick just north of the Red Hill bridge

That would possibly explain why the Grange railcar was running on this movements red lights all the way to Woodville! I cannot understand why they did not let the railcar go first and this movement followed it down as it was only going at slightly more than walking pace past platforms! The railcar would then get a clear run and after it was safely in At Woodville the Outer Harbour movement could then run through both unhindered. From what was mentioned early it was supposed to go onto the jail loop, stop, change ends and exit again down the Outer Harbour line and do the same to get back to Dry Creek. Might have been too much trouble so they did it the way you said.

It was long after sunset (10:05pm) so only one of my shots was barely presentable. A long lens also meant that I couldn't get all three loco's crossing Park Tce at Bowden.
As other have said, the movement was really slow and we also wondered why the railcar wasn't given a free run ahead of the special.

I heard the NRM would want an 830 on narrow gauge as a shunter.
