Vandals cause chaos on Ballarat train line

BALLARAT’s train service is in disarray after vandals cut signal cables at Rockbank late last night.
Five services between Ballarat and Melbourne have been cancelled and most morning trains will be delayed by 25 minutes.
The cables were cut in two places near Rockbank.
V/Line has cancelled three services from Southern Cross - the 6:12am to Ballarat, the 7:12am to Bacchus Marsh and the 9:06 to Wendouree.
The 8:16am and 8:38am service from Bacchus Marsh to Melbourne have been cancelled, as has the 11:04am train from Wendouree to Melbourne.
V/Line spokesperson Colin Tyrus said trains were “crawling” through Rockbank due to the loss of signal.
“When you lose signals have to run trains through caution at slow speed,” he said.
Mr Tyrus said because trains were running slowly, V/Line had to take some services out of the system to keep the timetable in order.
V/Line was repairing the damage, which delayed some trains by half an hour last night, and expected it to be completed by midday, he said.
“No one wants to start their Monday with these types of delays,” he said.
“This senseless vandalism is frustrating to both our customers and V/Line.
“We want to remind people that damaging railway equipment is a criminal act and we urge anybody who knows anything about this vandalism to call Crime Stoppers.”
Crime Stoppers can be contacted on 1800 333 000.

I guess we can always live in hope that these kinds of stupid people eventually cut some live 240v lines.

The original article mentioned that it affected several services last night. I was on the 18:18 (usually 18:08, delayed for the football crowd) down Ararat train last night and we flew through Rockbank at line speed. Must have happened after that.

I did see crews working at the Paynes Rd crossing when I was on my way to work along the Western Freeway at 5am this morning. (hard to miss the flashing lights in the dark)

Criminals always return to the scene of the crime. They must be locals who know about the consequences of disabling railway signalling.

They need to install CCTV. This is happening too often and inconveniencing too many travellers.

Well the more they do it the more the legal system will come down on them like a tonne of bricks. I reckon we should just wait until they're caught and then they should be made an example of.

The way i look at it is, What if vandals smashed the traffic lights at the city end of the Eastern Freeway..
I'm sure there would be video cameras, news media some politicians and a bit more action happening.
Seems with this issue there is nothing going on. Vline just shrugs apologizes and you hear nothing.

Do you really think so?

I reckon that when they are caught, their legal aid barrister will say they had an unhappy childhood and the magistrate will give them a $80 fine and 10 hours of community service. Rolling Eyes

This is despite the fact that they held up thousands of people, caused huge inconvenience and the collective repairs probably cost over $100,000. Essentially they will be let off with just the tinniest slap on the wrist and will probably do it again. Sad

That's why I reckon they need to be made an example of over it, unfortunately I have to agree with you that near nothing will be done about it. We can always dream though Laughing

A good case for a surveillance drone over the line to catch them in the act. Even if they get teated lightly it would still make them go elsewhere to make mischief.
