A couple of things about hosting and beta versions that might explain the decision logic.
I think a few people here are missing the point of a public beta. A public beta is not a finished product, it is a version with known, and unknown faults that the public can test and give feedback on. These faults are then progressively corrected with updates until the final polished and (hopefully) working product is finished. This is good method for a big project like this one being worked on by only one or two people with limited time. It means the public gets to try it out a lot sooner than they would otherwise, and we get to spend more of our valuble time modelling new content rather than testing.

Because of the need to make frequent updates as faults are identified, it is helpful to host somewhere I have direct control over. As it stands for Railpage I have to PM an admin to get previous versions taken down, something that can get understandably annoying for both parties if I have to change something suddenly. Hence the original plan to host the evolving beta versions on RailVictoria or file sharing services until the worst of the testing process is over. Then a final, nicely packaged version in a self extracting instaler can be uploaded to Railpage.

So that's why we did it this way, even though it is evidently unpopular with some people. I probably should have written a bigger disclaimer earlier about what "beta" means.

Like I said earlier, if this process seems like too much trouble (or you don't like the idea of using a product with known faults) you are most welcome to wait until the nicely packaged final product is released whenever that may be.

Also I've been told by the RailVictoria admin that the problem that was preventing some people downloading earlier has now been corrected.

Hope you (or anyone else) does not get to up tight about this issue. I and its almost certain myself and all others greatly apreciate the effort that you and any helpers have put into this.

Now I did test it again just now and the login problem still exists. I can log into the forums no problem but the login for the downloads site still comes up with "Error: The username you entered does not exist"

Station names between (but not including) Clifton Hill and Thomastown do not display correctly. Also, your speed limits don't match your speed limit signs.

I'm not concerned, I expected there was always going to be a few problems. Just about everyone has been very supportive and helpful so far, which is great. There was a time when this sort of process was a bit looked down on in Australian MSTS, so thanks for your support. It has certainly helped us a lot in working out what people are having problems with and getting it fixed.

You should overwrite all files when instaling. The only changes being made at this stage are bug fixes, so there's no advantage in keeping old versions.

I could have sworn I fixed both of those in the last update, but apparantly not. Thanks for that, I'll get right on it. Both are important for getting activities to work properly.

Something I'll start doing from now on (which I should have done before) is release patches alongside the full version of the route, which will patch any version to the latest version. Typically the changes amount to only a 1-2mb file size, much more friendly for frequent updates for people who already have the route.

They probably should put some text on the page that login is not required if logged in to the forums website.

2. Where did you get the Met Transit comeng from? The one I found is very basic but seems to be outdated compared to the metro comengs (in terms of modelling and sounds)

3. Please expand this to the whole suburban rail network. If possibly, by starting with the werribee line.

Last ones a bit of a joke unless you could actually be bothered to do it which I'm sure many of us would love.

Glad you enjoyed it! It's certainly encouraging to know that there's still people out there using MSTS and having fun with this stuff.

The Met comeng is not yet released, but is very nearly done and should be up shortly. The one you found would be Martin's original one from 10 years ago. The one I'm working on now has been updated to modern standards, the same as the Metro comeng.

I have a couple of activities in progress at the moment too. The use the Met comeng, so will be released along with it. Keep an eye on this thread over the next two weeks or so.

Unfortunately MSTS limitations probably prevent the whole suburban network being built in a single route, not to mention my own time limitations. Even including Flinders Street and the city loop in the Epping line was a stretch. If you have a look at some other threads in this forum though there's been a couple of other Melbourne suburban routes announced recently.

I do have plans to expand the Epping line to include another suburban line in future though, I'm sure everyone can guess what that one is.

Sorry. Another question. I watched a video of your route. It started in the loop and went to epping. It said how if you use openrails it causes the carriages to move around realistically. I downloaded openrails but the carriages are still stiff. Is there a setting I need to change or...

Press control+V to enable car movement. There's three levels of intensity, pressing control+V a fourth time resets it to zero.

If you go to options and then to the experimental tab, you can enable superelevated curves too. Not really realistic for Melbourne's traditionally bad quality track, but it does look nice.

I think these options have only relatively recently been added, so if you can't find them check that you have the latest version.

Really? I have an activity with an Epping-Flinders St service with no problems. Could you upload the activity?

I attempted to download the route but the Railpage link does not work, and the vicrail site is down. i tried some other routes and they all had their downloads working, so it is just the one file.

The current version on Railpage is version 2. The file can be downloaded on MSTS Epping line public beta 2 link.

On my mac the issue is the file name has a .txt suffix appended.  What error did you receive?

i now get the same issue. i have downloaded this file successfully in the past. the file has been downloaded 747 times. wow!

Just noticed this route has now been downloaded several 1000 times.
